Waffles & Honey Jewelry

In honor of Valentine’s Day, I wanted to share a sweet custom project that transformed an heirloom engagement ring into a stunning gemstone cluster necklace. 🩷

Stephen reached out last year, interested in creating a custom piece for his new wife Kelsey. He had a piece of jewelry that he wanted to redesign into something else for her as a surprise. Stephen shared images of the original sapphire and diamond ring. We chatted through possibilities for the new piece.

Stephen wanted to try and use the center diamond and a sapphire from the ring in our new necklace design. I got to work sketching designs incorporating the three stones.💎

After seeing the mockups, Stephen decided he liked symmetrical designs and wanted to stick with a blue/aqua stone and diamond color pallet.

Going off this feedback, I mocked up a few more rounds of design ideas for Stephen to refine. Stephen narrowed in on a 9 stone necklace design that featured all three of the primary stones in the original ring.✨

Now it was time to see the original ring in person to extract the stones and measure their actual dimensions. Once I received the ring I realized how deep the center diamond was. This would require alterations to our original stone layout in order to balance the necklace so it would not flip over, or lay crooked while on.

I worked with our CAD designer to come up with new stone layouts based on the stone weights. ✏️

Stephen and I worked through 7 different, more balanced stone layouts before moving forward with the CAD files.

Stephen approved the CAD, now it was time to source the 4 small aqua accent stones. I paid a visit to my colored stone dealer and found the perfect blue topaz for Kelsey’s necklace. 🔎

Now that I had all of our stones, it was time to grow the wax mold and begin production of the platinum necklace. Three weeks later the necklace was complete.

I shipped the finished necklace to Stephen and a few days later Kelsey texted me this photo with a note that read, “Stephen just gave it to me. I love it!”💗

Happy New Year! 🥂 We are kicking off our eleventh January here at Waffles & Honey, and are already dreaming up new designs for 2024! Before moving ahead, I first wanted to take a moment to honor what has brought W&H to this point — YOU.

Your incredible generosity also plays a leading role in the Waffles & Honey story. Thanks to you, in 2023 alone we were able to raise and donate $7,650 in support of eight amazing charitable causes ranging from local educational programming to community mental health support.

Most recently, you helped to raise $1,020 towards our annual contributions to the San Francisco Winter Homeless Shelter through sales at our Stonestown Holiday Pop-Up Shop. This organization is open from November-February to house the overflow of San Francisco’s homeless population during the very coldest and rainiest days of the year, and your donations have helped to provide: 160 meals, and blankets, wool socks, beds, medical care, and shelter to 100 individuals in need.🙏🏻

There is no doubt that as a community, we have made a difference. My heart is so full, having witnessed your immense kindness during the last year and truly, since the beginning.

The Star & Moon Collection ✨

Happy October! This month's custom journal is the story of matching wedding bands. 🤍

Earlier this year I shared the story of designing Rachel’s 3 stone engagement ring. Last month Neal & Rachel reached out about creating custom wedding bands for each of them.

We began with Neal’s ring. Although on the surface, men’s wedding bands look pretty straight forward, there are many design details to consider, depending on the groom. Neal and I began by sizing his finger and then discussing band width.✨

Due to Neal's active lifestyle, we wanted to keep his ring scaled appropriately to his finger. I showed Neal different band widths, and he decided on a 5mm width band.

Next we decided on the profile of the ring. Deciding between the dozens of profiles comes down to personal preference, and comfort. I guided Neal through which profiles are the most comfortable and durable for his lifestyle.💪


Neal decided on a flat, comfort fit profile. Now it was time to start designing Rachel’s band.

Rachel decided she wanted to create a band that she could wear either with her engagement ring, or on her right hand, on its own.💍

Rachel landed on a 2.75mm band with a matching profile to Neal's. We decided to taper her band on the bottom, so it was more comfortable to wear with her engagement ring.

Next: personalized details of Neal & Rachel’s ring set. First up: band finish. There are dozens of finishes that can be added to a band. I ran through some ideas with the couple and they decided on an organic, brushed finish.🖋️

The final detail to consider was if the couple wanted any hidden gemstones or engraving on the interior of their bands.

Since Neal has strong New Orleans Roots, the couple decided to have the phrase "Laissez les bons temps rouler!" (let the good times roll in French). They selected the font, and it was time to begin construction. ⚒️

3 weeks later their rings were complete and ready to ship:

The next day I received a text from them: “We love them!” What an honor to create these forever pieces for such dear friends. 💜
