We don’t have to sell y’all on Rubber Factory, but damn if it doesn’t stay cool. In Pitchfork’s 2004 review they said the album was “revitalizing the essence” of blues and rock ‘n’ roll. Nearly 20 years later, true and tried, The Black Keys authentic endeavor hits a note no other band has come near.

We’ll break it down real easy for millennials: Southern California.
The Bait Shop. Early 2000s. Two tall lanky guys sporting slim American Apparel tees on stage. They’re playing “Girl Is On My Mind” while Ryan tracks down Marissa and some drugged out, possessive dingus.

For Gen-Z: we don’t have an equivalent cultural reference, but we’re pretty sure you’ll feel like your truest, sweetest romantic self to “The Lengths.”

Hear select tracks from Rubber Factory —an album with something for everybody — on In The Basement, our weekly update of back catalogue tunes. Listen here: https://fatpossum.ffm.to/inthebasement.OFP

"Underneath the record’s enveloping shoegaze swoon, these quiet musings bring us close enough to feel the vulnerable intimacy of its creation. A Color of the Sky is the New York group’s most direct and fully rendered work to date: a beautiful collection of songs paying direct homage to the dreamy atmospheres, curling synthesizers, and blown-out guitars of slow-burning art rock and blistering shoegaze greats: Mazzy Star, My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Cocteau Twins, the Stone Roses. Yet Lightning Bug re-imagine this canon in the context of an entirely new plot. Like Creation Records fan fiction, a ’90s 4AD reboot, or a shoegaze memoir, A Color of the Sky builds upon a familiar palette, reconfiguring foundational sounds in order to reexamine them."

Mellow out and go inward with our weekly In The Basement playlist: https://fatpossum.ffm.to/inthebasement.OFP . This week’s feature is none other than Lightning Bug; the excerpt above is from Pitchfork.

Love ain’t always patient and it sure ain’t kind. Robert Belfour knew it; he knew love as good as anybody else. His last penny spent, he’d still follow a woman who’d tossed his clothes away. “What’s Wrong With You” pines for a lover who’s done him some wrong and some right just like a lot of blues songs, but Robert’s got a calmness. Other bluesmen get aggravated or rundown, but Robert Belfour is rock solid and steady. As they say, a good man is hard to find.

Hear Robert Belfour’s 2000 release “What’s Wrong With You” featured on our updated In The Basement playlist. Listen here: https://fatpossum.ffm.to/inthebasement.OFP

Here’s a look back at KEXP’s feature of Temples “Certainty” back when it was released in ‘16. We’ve added some songs from their album Volcano to this week’s In The Basement playlist. Listen here: https://fatpossum.ffm.to/inthebasement.OFP

“Temples are masters at crafting layered psychedelic rock that could convince even the sharpest ear that they were listening to a band from the 60's. And while that is enough to please many psych-rock aficionados, Temples is far more than pure tribute to a past age. The group finds sparseness within their layers of sound, accenting festive melodies that are hammered home by lead man James Bagshaw's floating vocals. Temples seemingly had their sound perfected on 2014's Sun Structures, but two years after their debut, they have reemerged riding a wave of synth, proving that nothing is perfect. Song of the day "Certainty" is the first single since Sun Structures and quite likely the first taste of Temple's forthcoming album. The track, which heavily features synths along with the booming drums and wandering riffs Sun Structures was crawling with, improves on an already winning recipe. Where Sun Structures tracks seemed to pick out and isolate melodies from the dense pool of sound, "Certainty" uses a duet of synthetic and analogue sonics to unify, providing a coherent frolic through a psychedelic soundscape.”

Sun’s high in the sky and you’re caked in sweat. Swipe your forearm by your forehead, everything gets sweatier. Your brow’s narrowed like doin’ that’ll help you see past the loosie tucked between your lips. That loosie’s laughing at you. Bless your heart, she don’t bother ya one bit. You’re focused. Feeling good. Might gonna go and f**k it all up. Gonna be fully fueled up when you do though, won’t bother you one bit.

More reckless than R.L. and not as country as Jelly Roll Kings, nobody did it quite like Paul “Wine” Jones. Nobody ever will. Not a hint of neuroses on that man, he had fervor like today’s crowd can’t queue up for a few chords. He didn’t play from his bones, fingertips, or deep down belly. Jones’ blues came crashing out of his joints. Cranked out a euphony of blues, rock, funk (a la an inner punk).

There ain’t a song on “Pucker Up Buttercup” we wouldn’t recommend, but we whittled it down and added a couple to our In The Basement playlist. We update it every week, so follow along & God keep y’all. Listen here: https://fatpossum.ffm.to/inthebasement.OFP
