Joanna Wilson Art

Joanna Wilson Award Winning Contemporary Artist Joanna Wilson’s art is a paradox of thoughtful drawing and exuberant expressionism.

Born and raised in the Highlands of Scotland, there is a lilting quality to her handling of form reminiscent of the glens where she grew up. But her figurative compositions often incorporate decorative elements, which seem to reference the industrial environs of Edinburgh and London where she has also lived and worked as an artist. Cartographical lines, organic shapes, monochrome sketches with col

LOVELUST
Joanna Wilson
Mixed media on canvas
150 × 100 cm, 2022
£3800
lovelust /Invinst/ noun
A shimmering immensity of love between two people that find completion in one another, usually characterised by a profound attraction that defies understanding or explanation.
If this colloquialism were to find visual form, it would be this painting: one of a series produced during the global pandemic. With lockdown, Wilson continued to draw from life — albeit virtually— with All The Young Nudes, a Scotland-based online life drawing collective. The intimate yet exuberant pieces that resulted from these sessions seem to express that familiar paradox we all experienced during the pandemic: gratitude for the opportunities that technology yields, but at the same time a deep yearning for human connection. HEARTSONG
CONTEMPORARY ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONS
Abstract art can be dirficult to interpret.
The aesthetic qualities stand alone, but our experience of them is so much richer if we can also understand why they came to be. In 2021, Grantown-based Joanna Wilson's art took a metaphysical turn.
Through the medium of paint pouring, she discovered a number of symbolic affinities between the colours she was selecting intuitively and her own psycho-spiritual needs at that moment in time.
The healing properties of certain crystals, the revealing inner wisdom of oracle cards and the outward sense that a greater power is at work helped her to join the dots between her own creativity and Creation itself. The result is her heartsong. a collection of visual vibrations that invite us to connect, reflect and find resonance in the pure visual music of abstract expressionsism itselt.

🧡 Look out for this one Abstract Exhibition 7-21st October 2923🧡

AMIDST THE FRAY
Mixed media on paper
100 × 70 cm, 2023
This would not be the first abstract artwork to note some kind of chaos in its title. And, at first glance, this might be what we see: a profusion of bright cOlOurs, expressive marks and impulsive diagonals. But a closer inspection reveals those familiar figurative elements and their underlying visual harmony. Rather than marring the canvas, the strikethroughs guide us into the composition. Once there, we are moved by a familiar sense of rhythm and flow. The neons that grabbed our attention give way to earth tones-burnt umber, terracotta and Himalayan salt hues -that gently ground us. Like a guided meditation, this piece suggests finding calm amidst the fray. holding space for the turmoil, while anchoring our awareness in the present.
