It is with deep sadness that I share the passing of my beloved teacher and friend, the great Oscar Ghiglia, whose loss today March 3, 2024 is mourned throughout the world. I had the fortune of studying with Oscar from age 14 for five summers at the Aspen Music Festival where he trained an entire generation of American , inspiring us with his brilliantly poetic and passionate artistry. I was honored to be his teaching assistant in the third summer, and to become director of the festival's program in 1993 where I teach and perform every summer.
Born in Livorno, Italy, August 13, 1938, Oscar Ghiglia studied with Andres Segovia and taught for nearly five decades at Siena's Accademia Chigiana. PHOTOS: together in during one of his many visits to give guest classes for my Juilliard students; our first meeting when I was 14, St. Paul MN after his performance with Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra; playing for Andres Segovia in his legendary 1965 Compostela, Spain class in a rare photo showing my three teachers together: Segovia far right, Aldo Minella at age 26 (dark hair, legs crossed) a month before I was to begin guitar studies with him in Varese , and Ghiglia age 27.
Heartfelt condolences to his dear wife, the great guitarist Elena Papandreou whose care and dedication nurtured and inspired Oscar with love through his challenging recent years of illness. He will be dearly missed, living on forever in our hearts and music.

Thrilled my students Ziggy and Miles Johnston are the first guitar duo in the 62-year history of Young Concert Artists to win - & the second ever (last was 21 years ago!) Over 150 non-guitar instrumentalists, ensembles and vocalists from all over the world competed this year, making their accomplishment all the more extraordinary and a triumph for the world! They are among five brilliant musicians who will receive YCA management for a minimum of three years. Congratulations to all the winners!

Previous YCA alumni include luminaries such as Emanuel Ax-, Julia Bullock, Jeremy Denk, Dawn Upshaw, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Ray Chen, Pinchas Zukerman and many more. Ziggy and Miles, who are brothers, have studied with me for the last 4.5 years at The Juilliard School where they received Master of Music degrees and are in the Artist Diploma program as the first and first guitar duo in the 20-year history of Juilliard's AD. Miles was my fellowship teaching assistant at the Aspen Music Festival where both spent two summers.
