On August 8, 2024, Investigators with the Shelby County Drug Enforcement Task Force conducted multiple investigations on drug dealers in Shelby County. At the conclusion of the day, DTF Investigators seized trafficking amounts of Fentanyl and M**hamphetamine. Investigators also seized Oxycodone, Alprazolam, Suboxone, Xanax, Ma*****na, drug paraphernalia, and a firearm.
Investigators are still investigating the cases made during the one day operation and charges will be filed and warrants obtained soon. We will continue to work tirelessly to keep these drugs off of our street, our citizens safe, and hold drug dealers accountable for their actions.
We get a lot of questions about the dangers of fentanyl. We have seen an alarming increase in fentanyl cases and overdoses in Shelby County as well. With school starting back, we think that this is a great time to share with citizens, parents, and teachers about the dangers of fentanyl. The Real Deal on Fentanyl is a website that anyone can visit to learn about the drug, how it’s made, identifying signs of an overdose, how to administer Naloxone, and also has a place to download educational age appropriate lesson plans and flyers. If you have questions about fentanyl and the dangers of it, visit realdealonfentanyl.com
We hope this will help educate citizens, parents, and teachers to get the word out. If you would like to leave a tip for us, please visit dtf.shelbyal.com and click on the “Tips” tab. As always, you can remain completely anonymous.

In the early morning hours of June 29, 2024, patrol deputies with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a welfare check at an apartment complex in north Shelby County. Deputies located a child walking around the parking lot and began to investigate. They quickly determined that the child had gotten out of an apartment close by and the door to the residence was wide open. Deputies went to the residence and made contact with Jason David Miller. While speaking to him about the child, deputies observed narcotics in plain view. They then contacted investigators with the Shelby County Drug Task Force and they responded to the scene. A search warrant was obtained and executed on the residence. After completing the search, a large amount of narcotics were found and some within common areas and within reach of the child. Miller was charged with Chemical Endangerment of a Child, Trafficking Illegal Drugs, Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance, Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Distribute, and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
Miller is currently in the Shelby County Jail
On July 11th 2024, Investigators from the Shelby County Drug Enforcement Task Force were contacted by the Helena Police Department in reference to a drug complaint. DTF Investigators went to the residence and obtained probable cause to obtain a search warrant for the residence. After the ex*****on of the search warrant, Investigators seized psilocybin mushrooms, hydrocodone, m**hadone, he**in, m**h/fentanyl compound, and para-fluorofentanyl.
We are seeing fentanyl in Shelby County more than ever, which is extremely dangerous and fatal. We now have a confirmed case of para-fluorofentanyl, and according to the CDC, this variant is even more deadly than pure fentanyl.
Investigators with the Drug Task Force are still investigating this and we will work with the District Attorney’s Office to prosecute all involved to the fullest extent of the law.
On 6/20/2024, Investigators with the Shelby County Drug Enforcement Task Force received a tip that a large amount of narcotics were being sent through the mail. Investigators were able to locate and charge Nicolas Gamez with Trafficking Illegal Drugs. He is currently in the Shelby County Jail.
On 6/16/ 2024, an investigator with the Shelby County Drug Enforcement Task Force was off duty and doing some grocery shopping for the coming week. As he was in the parking lot of the store, about to go in, he observed a male and female in the parking spot beside him acting very strange. Like all concerned citizens, he felt like som**hing was suspicious and decided to sit there a second and observe what was going on. He then observed the female passenger look around and then began using illegal narcotics in the vehicle beside him. He then called for assistance and Alabaster PD responded. APD made contact with the male and female and found both of them in possession of fentanyl, ketamine, and drug paraphernalia.
Amber Coleman of McCalla, Al. and Peter Herbinger of Bessemer, Al. were both arrested for 2 counts of Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Coleman was also charged with Obstructing Governmental Operations. Both subjects also had outstanding warrants with other agencies outside of Shelby County.
Moral of the story, don’t use illegal narcotics at all, but definitely not in a public parking lot. Citizen assistance is one of our best tools to take harmful drugs off the street. If you see som**hing, say som**hing...

Fentanyl use is on the rise at an alarming rate both nationally and locally here in Shelby County. It is one of the most dangerous and fatal illegal drugs that we have seen over the last few years. Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid similar to morphine, although it is 50-100 times more potent. Its intended use is to treat severe pain typically after surgeries, and prescribed by medical doctors. Now, it is used, produced, and sold illegally. Fentanyl has now become the most common drug involved in overdose deaths in the United States.
According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, a dose as small as 2 milligrams of Fentanyl equates to a potentially deadly dose. In 2023, 79.5 million fentanyl laced fake pills and nearly 12,000 pounds of Fentanyl powder was seized. Those seizures are equivalent to 376.7 million lethal doses.
The Shelby County Drug Enforcement Task Force Commander, Lieutenant Clayton Smith stated, “The majority of our investigations over the last six months have led to seizures of Fentanyl. In the tragic event of an overdose death, Fentanyl was the lethal drug used almost every time. We will always use our resources to find the Fentanyl dealers harming our citizens and ensure they are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law”.
