Safar: The Month of Beginnings and Endings

On August 18, 2023, the Islamic community ushered in Safar, the second month of the Islamic calendar. Unlike the preceding month, Al-Muharram, Safar isn't distinguished as sacred, yet it remains significant. Historically, the name "Safar" means 'empty'. This derived from a time when inhabitants of Makkah would depart their homes, either in search of food during scarce winter provisions or after Al-Muharram expeditions, rendering their enemies' homes empty.

Safar carries a unique weight in Islamic history. Prior to Islam, Arabs fused Muharram and Safar, associating the latter with pilgrimage. Prophet Muhammad (saw) however, clarified Safar's distinction from the sacred months and Hajj. He further abolished pre-Islamic customs that weren't in line with Islam.

Significantly, the Prophet's (saw) migration from Makkah to Madinah began in Safar, with divine protection shielding him from assassination attempts. This month also marked the onset of the Prophet's (saw) illness leading to his passing in Rabi al-Awwal.

Despite its lack of sacred distinction, Safar prompts reflection on important historical moments, emphasizing the Prophet’s (saw) devotion to Islam, and the divine protection and guidance granted to him.
