What a great group of people here at the .
Getting all set up in the Buffalo Creek Art Center booth at the Reno Tahoe International Art Show.
This mask is part of a series where I used ribbons of clay to form a wavy headdress around each piece. I have more experimenting to do with this idea. It has wax encaustic finish over underglaze colors.
People comment on this mask when I display it int the art tent at Santa Fe Artists Market. They say things like, "I like her expression" and "I like her eyes". I can never predict which pieces people will be drawn to most.
With this little face I am playing with the mottled surface finish and adding some light blue underglaze to highlight the texture of the shells. I might darken the blue color just a bit. What do you think? Is the blue too bright?
At the Santa Fe Artists Market on Saturdays this year. I go about once a month, through October. I love this area of Santa Fe, NM - the Railyard art district is very fun and inspirational.
I have so much fun creating the mottled texture on pieces like this mask. There's much more to explore with this idea. I will post more experiments in the upcoming summer months. Let me know what you think of this surface treatment. The bare clay was originally white!
Love the way this piece, "In the Field", turned out. I like the expression on her face and the wavy flowers surrounding her. A deep wood frame surrounds the figure and flowers.
"Feeling Curious" was an experiment. I sculpted the face from solid clay then cut grooves all over. I used layered underglazes to bring out the texture. It's mounted on a wood plaque for hanging.
Additional photos of the opening reception of NMPCA's Celebration of Clay: Uplifted at Taos Ceramics Center, going on until July 23rd.
I have been spending time with this piece, "Inspirate", lately and I am growing to appreciate it more and more. Here are some shots with details of the handmade, porcelain necklace.
