Spring foraging is on my mind. Fall is a awesome time to find your spring ostrich fern hot spots. Like always forage responsibly!
A little early but I will take it!
Goodies from the smoker... chocolate cake and apple pie. Homemade apple pie filling made with maple syrup for a sweetener.
Hiding in plain sight.
My problem is I love learning new things so my list of hobbies is endless...πππ
Changing seasons and beautiful fall color. If you are hoping to catch some this year. In many areas it better be soon. They may not be there next weekend. Take the opportunity to listen to the ballgame on the radio. Load up the family and take a ride thru the country side.
Took a trip north to see the Delaware Mine. Took a little time for some rock hounding. And play with new phone camera.
I have been taking pictures with my new phone. Verizon offered a deal I couldn't refuse. Other than the pains of a new phone I like it.
Friday night in Lacrosse. Interesting drive.
Well I took a little time to venture out looking for some chanterelles. Found a handful to pick.lots of dried out pins. I was blessed with a handful of trumpets. Did find one nest of mosquitoes. I cannot believe there is any mosquitoes as dry as it is...
Great opportunity to spend a little time learning about the critters in your area.
Wildlife research can be difficult if your subject doesnβt *want* to be seen. This is where you come in.
We're looking for volunteers to host trail cameras that monitor Wisconsin wildlife (like the elusive bobcat here).
Snapshot Wisconsin is a community science program that provides volunteers with trail cameras to gather valuable data that gives a behind-the-scenes look at wildlife. The images gathered from these trail cameras join a massive dataset, providing information that isnβt available from other sources.
In the case of bobcats, Snapshot Wisconsin collects data statewide and year-round instead of only during hunting or trapping season. This added layer of data better informs species advisory committees.
More cameras on the landscape improves the Snapshot dataset and improves vital wildlife research that can inform sustainable management decisions. Snapshot Wisconsin makes it easy to contribute! Trail cameras and training are provided for free to approved volunteers who have:
β Access to 10 contiguous acres of public or private property (the Snapshot team can help you get the proper permissions to host on public land!)
β High-speed internet
β Basic computer skills
β The ability to check the camera every 90 days
Interested? Head to our website to apply for a camera: https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/Research/ApplyHostTrailCamera
You can learn alot from the nature around you if you meditate on it!
I simply love the Prairie..
Made my Canadian trip a bunch of firsts with the flyrod.
Todays breakfast. Bacon, eggs, ostrich fern with ramp butter.
Filled this seasons tag Saturday morning. One set of pictures is me trying to pictures. The other is same bird with help of a friend... I think I need a photogragher. Or at least better equipment.
Welcome to turkey camp.
Ostrich Ferns. Yup that's what is next. Yummy
Also remember think sustainable harvest when foraging. The greens you take directly impacts the plants ability to replenish itself for next year.
Spring is on my mind! First turkey season, then the peepers, now ramps! Soon to come??
Disclamer time: when foraging it is bery important to practice sustainable harvest. Ramps for instance take 3yrs or more to generate a "bulb" worthy of eating. 5 to 7 years to propagate more plants. That said you can sustainably harvest a large patch. Always remember there may also be others visiting your "secret" patch. You can also pick only 1 leaf per plant. At a 1 per 10 plant ratio. Remember they are best fresh.
Remember if you only take what you need you can enjoy for years to come.
Nothing says spring like peepers! Make sure you have sound on.
Even with the on again off again weather of the first season I managed to bag a jake.
Well thats a new one.. Geese in the yard.
Sleepy Hollow?
The dawn of a new season! New life. New adventures await !
I have both my coyote rifles are ready for action. Both are .204 R***r. And Thursday is a full moon... Hoping for left over snow.
Pine Mountain Ski Jump. Annie and I spent the weekend watching jumpers from all over the world.
Getting ready to teach another generation about what new experiences the outdoors has to offer. As soon as the water softens that is.ππ
I am beyond pumped! I have called in a few coyotes in my day finally connected! 15 short minutes on the call. And history starts!
Beautiful day to be out and about! Cold weather does amazing things with humidity.
How cool is that! I would love to come across something like that on one of my adventures.
Now this is COOL!
Another 3 miles of walking today. Getting quite efficient even moved 2 sets.
Today's adventure took me to the eye dr and new territory. And yes I got stuck on the way home. Didn't think to take pictures of that part of the adventure tho.
