Our single from late last year, “Heart That Just Won’t Break,” can now be heard on the various streaming services. This is a good time to remind you to buy the 7”, which is a split with our good friends in REQ'D.
Collisionville/REQ'D Split, by Collisionville 1 track album
We’ve been working on a new album that should come out sometime next year. It will have a Christmas song on it. We recorded ourselves playing it at practice this week so we could share it with you now. It’s called “Christmas Day.” Happy winter holidays to you all, from Marilyn Monroe , Andy Warhol, Samuel Beckett, Elvis Presley, The Replacements, and us.
FACT
Here’s a review of our new 7” from Alt77! “Collisionville’s Heart That Just Won’t Break is a country-punk song written with perfect punctuation and grammar and set on fire by the light of a cheap cigarette. It’s a tune that sounds like the jam session that a professional country band might engage in after the paying customers have left home. It’s a heavy bowling ball of a song, the kind that flattens whatever it manages to catch in its path.” 🎳
Devastating truths: Collisionville and Space Dudes reviewed - Alt77 Collisionville’s Heart That Just Won't Break is a country-punk song written with perfect punctuation and grammar and set on fire by the light of a cheap cigarette. This is Alt77’s review.
Translated from Portuguese: “Collisionville brings a mix of English punk and American country on their new single ‘Heart That Just Won't Break.’ The song is energetic and lively with guitar solos, the beat of the drums and with a lot of agility in the voice in a sound pulled to rockabilly very well done.
“It also accompanies a super funny video clip that expresses well the kind of humor that the band conveys in an unpretentious and very fun atmosphere.”
Head on over and watch the video again. (Don’t tell us you haven’t seen it yet?!!?) Then think about buying the 7” from our Bandcamp page, https://collisionville.bandcamp.com

Seems like now’s as good a time as any to tell you that our new bass player is Vinnie Reeder, who previously played in Vitamin Party and Philistines. His first show with us will be 10/8 at the Golden Bull, in support of the incomparable Richard Stuverud. We’d love to see you there!
Another cryptic post from our record label. Probably means that there’s news forthcoming.
Our office cat is inspecting these 7” record mailers. They just arrived yesterday. What do you suppose they’re for?
We spent the whole weekend tracking eight new tunes at Sharkbite in Oakland with Antisleep Audio and it was a blast. Conor is now making his way to his new home in the Midwest. We have more work to do with recording, but we are on the lookout now for a new bass player, FYI.
As the hour of his departure from California draws nearer, it’s time that we celebrate Conor Thompson’s 14 years as our bass player.
Our original bass player, Bill Ramsay, left for his native Massachusetts in 2007. Stephen spent months after that working on our second album, I Spied a Spider, and Conor contributed a backing vocal on “Sleeping in a Tree.” In the summer of 2008, Conor joined officially. We’ve lost track by now, but we think his first show with us was around Halloween of that year.
In the years that followed, Conor played and sang on our album The Revenge of Two-Gun Pete, released in 2013; and on Stones, Keys, Flat Ninths, & Salvage, a double LP released in 2018. We toured the western United States, played a Saturday night at Bottom of the Hill, and made two appearances on KALX Live!.
Conor’s powerful, tuneful, inimitable bass playing become an essential part of our sound, along with his great and spirited singing, not to mention all the brilliant arrangement ideas he contributed. Along the way, he picked up the upright bass and brought an amazing dimension to our acoustic set. And not to get all corny here, but he’s been an incredible friend the entire time.
The state of Wisconsin will be lucky to have him. We intend to carry on after he moves, knowing full well that the band will never be the same again. We invite you to come see us at Amado’s in San Francisco this Saturday, for one more show with the Mighty Conor Thompson before he gets in the moving truck. Link to advanced tickets in the comments.
Thank you Conor, and Godspeed. Here, let’s look at some photos:
This is in two weeks! Our first show in over two years. But also, very sadly, one of your last chances to see us with Conor on bass. He’s moving away from California soon. 😥

Ben Adrian was our drummer from roughly 2008-2011 (and he also played some guitar here and there, especially for acoustic shows). Then he moved to LA and started working for Line6, but has actually been involved one way or another with everything we’ve released to this point. Here’s a video about Line6 with a lot of him in it. Thanks for the shout out, Ben! We miss you but it’s great to see you doing so well. https://youtu.be/3LE85M2eAM8

There seem to be some odd shenanigans going on at out record label. Someone could look at these images and learn about our future plans.
In light of the recent announcement that Charley Patton will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, here is a reminder of our version of his great tune “Shake It and Break It,” from our 2018 album: https://collisionville.bandcamp.com/track/shake-it-and-break-it-2
This version includes our friend Indofunk Satish (from The Nevermind Orchestra) on trumpet. Links in the comments to Charley Patton’s original, and other stuff.

So we’re still waiting to put out a split 7” with our good friends REQ'D. We probably don’t have to explain the reasons for the delay. It should happen in 2021, though! In the meantime, tide yourself over with this REQ’D tune from earlier this year. Stephen pitched in with a banjo part! Mixed by Jack Endino, how cool is that? https://reqd.bandcamp.com/track/cold-lightning

We had a practice today in Cory’s backyard. First time playing together in months. Felt great!
Today we’ve released a recording from the vault, available on YouTube, and for streaming and downloading from Bandcamp. It’s the original 4-track cassette version of “Help Yourself,” recorded in Denver in May of 1997. Stephen plays guitar, drums, and does the vocal. George Wilson (currently of The New Narrative) is on bass.
Stephen sent an early mix of this to his friend Brian Keizer, a music and culture critic who wrote for SPIN and the San Francisco Bay Guardian, and was on the nominating committee for the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame for several years. Here’s some of what Brian had to say about the recording:
"'Help Yourself' opens with a downshift of turnarounds... You keep waiting for the words to this epic but they don't come... And then the voice is there. It's like a dolphin leaping free of the ocean. 'Shoot your breath into the air/It's so cold outside you can see it hanging there.' We are in the loping sprawl and the summery lassitude has already been cut by those lines. 'You are heavier in the water/You are safer at the shallow end.' And there comes the summer pool largesse rising to the center of the mix. It's a song of all seasons it seems, but one thing is certain, whoever he's singing to isn't going to get the verses to line-read and ponder. All the main action of life is in the unsaid riddle, the space between the body and mind in nature.”
Brian passed away earlier this year. Reviewing the 1997 recording, we see now that subsequent versions we recorded of the song failed to convey the feeling as well. So we transferred the original 4-track tape to digital, and had Ben Adrian (our drummer from roughly 2008-2011) do this new mix. We release it now in tribute to our fallen brother.
