News 19/02/2024

I've posted a new entry on my NEWS section of my website regarding the uncertain future of my next book...

News (February 19, 2024) I’ve finished the authorial revisions for the latest novel (5th draft) now entitled WORLDS NOT VISIBLE. But now I have another (and more significant) issue—how to get it out there to readers. My publisher since 2000 had been DAW Books, then part of Penguin Random House, and m...

SLEEPER STRADDLE (https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/.../george-r-r-martin.../), the second Wild Cards original under our new contract with Penguin Random House, will be released in hardcover on FEBRUARY 6. As it happens, I'll have a Croyd/Oddity story in the volume—make sure to check it out!

We received the very sad news that Howard Waldrop passed away on January 15th at the age of 77. I knew Howard via George Martin and Wild Cards. It was Howard who wrote the first Wild Cards story: "Thirty Minutes Over Broaday" in the initial WC anthology. though he wrote nothing else for WILD CARDS. Howard, I know, always said he also wanted to write the _last_ WC story for the final anthology of the series, but alas, that's not to be, as the WC series is still going strong and there are already a few more anthologies in the series still to come.

Howard (or H'ard, as he was often called for his strong Texas accent) was a brilliant, funny, and unique writer, a great off-the-cuff raconteur, and an avowed Luddite who never owned a computer. He wrote almost exclusively short fiction and a fair amount of it. If you're not familiar with Howard's work, you might start with the story "The Ugly Chickens" which I was lucky enough to hear him read years ago at a convention.

I wish Howard were still around to write that last WC story. Knowing Howard, it would have been a corker.

To all of our FB friends: It’s been a rough, crowded, and stressful last three months or so in the Parsley-Leigh household, and we just haven’t had the time to write holiday cards to everyone or put together a end-of-the-year missive. We apologize if you haven’t received at least a card from us; it’s not that we’ve deliberately dropped you from our list. It’s just that we have found the free time to get it together, and for that, we ask you to forgive us. Hopefully, next year will be less stressed and crowded!

I have a new post up on the WILD CARDS blog, about using personal experiences as fodder for fiction -- take a look, and hope you enjoy the read!:

Just a reminder that I have several songs up on Bandcamp that you can listen to for free, or -- assuming you like them -- download them to your computer so you'll have 'em forever for a mere buck each (or less; you can get all 16 of 'em for $10.40. That's -- Steve's kicks up his calculator, because doing math in his head is not one of his skills -- 65 cents each).

Just saying...

Today (November 15) is it, the last day to snag the HUGE offer below: 5 hardcover first editions, signed, as well as a cornucopia of miscellaneous Irish goodies!
****
I’ve visited Ireland several times: the first time in 1999 with my sister Sharon, my parents and my Uncle Dewey and Aunt Dee, where I first fell in love with the Emerald Isle; next in 2017, on a trip with Sharon and her husband Dave when (alas) Denise was too ill to accompany us; in May of 2019 on a Study Abroad trip with my fellow NKU university professor and friend Kelly Moffett and several of our creative writing students; then later in September of 2019, when Denise and I went to the Science Fiction World Convention (“Worldcon” to any fannish folk) in Dublin, though we also spent several days in Wales where we visited an ailing friend. I’m hoping those won’t be my only trips there…

Of my 30+ novels, five of them are specifically set either in Ireland (Crow of Connemara), or in a fictional version of Ireland on another world/time/place entirely (all the others). They are, in chronological order from earliest to most recent:
HOLDER OF LIGHTNING (by S.L. Farrell), book 1 of the Cloudmages Trilogy: 2003
MAGE OF CLOUDS (by S.L. Farrell), book 2 of the Cloudmages Trilogy: 2004
HEIR OF STONE (by S.L. Farrell), book 3 of the Cloudmages Trilogy: 2005
CROW OF CONNEMARA (by Stephen Leigh): 2015
AMID THE CROWD OF STARS (by Stephen Leigh): 2021

Of the five books, four are fantasy (AMID is science fiction). I also wrote a non-fiction piece about my first trip to Ireland (posted on my website ages ago Way Back When), written a novelette that’s an alternate history of the Irish Easter Rising of the early 20th century, published in Alternate Peace (edited by Steven Silver and Joshua Palmetier; Zombies Need Brains, LLC. July 2019), actually composed a rare (for me) poem, “Three Ph**li: Glendalough, Tara, & Lehinch” (published in the literary magazine Many Nice Donkeys, Vol. 1, Issue 1, edited by Nik Moore, Jen Fischer Davis, Maggie Fulmer, Alexander Walz, and Jasmine Williamson. March 2022.)

All of those, plus more, are on the USB stick that comes with this.
I’m putting out the remaining offers to all of my FB readers who live in the continental U.S.. Message me on FB if you want to be among them; I’ll let you know if you've snagged one of the few remaining sets.

For your $60 (or $50 if you're local and willing to pick them up so I don't have to pay postage!), you’ll get all five books in their hardcover first editions, signed by me or my S.L. Farrell pseudonym, along with the USB stick which contains (in .rtf format) “Digging Up Roots”, the non-fiction travel article I wrote on my return from that first trip; the novelette “Easter Rising”; the poem “Three Ph**li…” as well as a few short movies (.mov) and 40+ of my favorite photos of Ireland from over the years (.jpg)—believe me, I have many, MANY more pics, since Ireland’s so very photogenic! You'll also receive on the USB stick my commentary on the photos!

FREE SHIPPING on this offer, too (via media mail -- and I’m shipping ONLY to the continental U.S.

Maybe later on I’ll offer a scaled-down version of this special… but I make no promises.

You can pay via Paypal to sleigh(AT)farrellworlds.com (replacing (AT) with @, of course!). If you’re in the Apple universe, you can pay via Apple Cash. Or you can send me your credit card info and I’ll use my Square account. Or just contact me and I’m sure we can work something out. And, of course, you’d need to send me your snail mail address so I know where to send the above (unless you’re local to Cincinnati, in which case, you can come and pick it up and get $10 off!).

If you’re interested, DON’T WAIT!

A reminder that today IS First Friday & Bandcamp's monthly First Friday sale!

"On the first Friday of the month since March of 2020, we’ve waived our revenue share to help support artists on Bandcamp. Over the course of just those 30 days, fans have paid artists and labels more than $106 million USD. If you’re among the nearly 1.6 million fans who have participated, thank you..."
Again, I have yet to sell a song of mine on a First Friday, so you can consider this an unofficial “Go Fund Me” for me, but one where you will receive something tangible for your donation.

I have several songs uploaded on Bandcamp. Here's the link: https://sleighwriter.bandcamp.com -- feel free to browse my tunes and listen to them. I might suggest these titles especially: “Demon & Beast”, “You’ve Gone”, “Slip Away”, “I’m Home”, “Ugly Broken Dreams” or heck, just pick one at random! They cost very little and once you’ve bought it, you own that song (in several different formats) forever and you’ll have my undying gratitude to boot!

If you like my efforts and want to support me in writing more tunes, why not purchase one or more today? You’ll be donating to your local starving artist. And thanks for your support!

Game of Thrones author sues ChatGPT owner OpenAI 21/09/2023

George RR Martin is suing OpenAi, the owner of ChatGPT. And it's not just George, it's also John Grisham, Jonathan Franzen, Jodi Picoult and George Saunders. The Author's Guilds filed the lawsuit in Manhattan Federal Court, says that the authors' copyrighted material was used without permission to make ChatGPT smarter and that OpenAI "engaged in systematic theft on a mass scale."

There have been other similar lawsuits filed, calling for AI companies to compensate the owners of copyright material used to 'train' the programs.

A writer, I have to agree. If someone uses material I've written and copyrighted, I expect compensation. My writing is a source of income for me (and now that I'm retired from teaching, it's my primary source other than social security checks.) So George and all my fellow authors with far more influence and name recognition than me, go for it. I wish you success!

I knew I forgot one: Thing 3 -- I received a review of my novel BOUND TO A SINGLE SUN (https://www.amazon.com/Bound-Single-Sun-Stephen-Leigh-ebook/dp/B0B6Z3YRHW/) from an unexpected source, a friend who doesn't read science fiction and (as far as I know) had never read any of my books, but who decided to give this one a shot.

Here what she wrote to me:

***
"It makes you wonder what life will be. Seriously. Where we are now, where we have come from. Where things will go.
How does your brain work!
Brilliant!
Exciting!
So much imagination!

In two chapters, I'm saying:
Mystery
Sci fi
Love story
Suspense/thriller

"Bed nest"... love"

That was nice to receive out of the blue!

Let's see: a potpourri of things today...

Thing 1: A reminder that it's First Friday on Bandcamp (see previous post). I might suggest taking a listen to the earlier tunes I have up on Bandcamp, on which Devon (with a few exceptions) plays drums, and some of which were professionally mixed by Brandon Scott Coleman. I'd suggest checking out "Demon and Beast," "Self-fulfilling Fool," "You've Gone," "Daughter of Daire Dá Dos," "Slip Away," "I'm Home," "Quid Pro Quo," "Parting Glass," and "Ugly Broken Dreams (Irish Waltz Lament)."

Thing 2: Denise, Lorraine Kawecki, Karen Kelley, and I went to the Pablo Picasso display at the Cincinnati Art Museum last night. Picasso (I will admit) is not my favorite artist or personality of the period, but he was still important, and it was interesting to see several of his paintings in person that were on loan to our art museum for the show.

Below are a few photos:

Cloudmages Trilogy-- Hardcovers, 1st Edition, Signed | Sleighwriter 03/02/2023

I let someone borrow a copy of HOLDER OF LIGHTNING, the first book in my “Cloudmages” series (under my “S.L. Farrell” pseudonym, DAW Books, 2003-2005) and my first attempt at high fantasy. I read the first few chapters before I gave it to her, and that started me reading the entire trilogy again, which follows three generations of a single family—the protagonist of MAGE OF CLOUDS is the daughter of the protagonist of HOLDER, and the protagonists of HEIR OF STONE are the offspring of the protagonist of MAGE. I’ve just finished the read, and I must say (with no pretense of false modesty) that I thought it was pretty damned good, all around, with some nice twists and turns and a very satisfactory bitter sweet ending.

SO… if you’ve not read those books, or if you have and want a signed copy of all three volumes in hardcover, over on my Square site I’ve put the trilogy on sale: $20 for all three volumes. I have ten sets to sell, so if you want one, head over to https://stephenleigh.square.site/product/Cloudmages_HC/5?cs=true&cst=popular and order your set. Once they’re gone, they’re gone…

Here’s a taste of the reviews for the books:

"[A] richly detailed fantasy debut launches a new series that's sure to delight fans of Celtic fiction... Powerful scenes of magic-wielding and a vividly depicted Celtic society." -- Publisher's Weekly, 12/9/2002 issue

"This first volume in 'The Cloudmages' series is an unusual Celtic fantasy set in a land of rival kingdoms skirmishing for power as a long-absent magic returns. [Farrell] spins an absorbing tale full of wonders, largely self-contained despite being only the first in a series." -- Carolyn Cushman for Locus Magazine

-- Publisher's Weekly "TOP PICK! ...Farrell offers up a beautifully written tale, intertwining Celtic mythology and epic fantasy, deftly managing political and romantic subplots that add depth and color to the story. Rich in detail and characterization, this novel will delight fans of complex fantasy fiction." -- Romantic Times Book Club

"The second book in the "Cloudmages" series, MAGE OF CLOUDS, is a tremendous fantasy... fantasy aficionados will greatly value this powerful book that ignores the middle syndrome with a powerful plot and deep cast." -- Review Centre (UK)

"Farrell creates a world filled with Celtic flavor and richly inventive back history and peoples it with strong male and female characters. Amid scenes of sorcerous rivalries and political maneuverings runs a story of a mother's love for her child and a woman's loyalty to her land and her magic." -- Library Journal *Starred Review*

“Good enough to be cast in gold." -- Booklist, Paula Luedtke, American Library Association.

"Farrell continues to shine as one of the strongest voices in the Celtic fantasy subgenre." -- Publishers Weekly

"S. L. Farrell has a solid third tale about magic flowing from the stars and caught by the stones of the Cloudmages... I love these tales." -- Henry Leon Lazarus for Center City Weekly Press (Philadelphia)

Tomorrow is "First Friday" on Bandcamp, which is the best time for anyone to purchase music. Why?

Let Bandcamp itself explain it: "On the first Friday of the month since March of 2020, we’ve waived our revenue share to help support the many artists who have seen their livelihoods disrupted by the pandemic. Over the course of 23 days, fans have paid artists and labels more than $84 million dollars, helping cover rents, mortgages, groceries, medications, and much more. If you’re among the nearly 800,000 fans who have participated, thank you.

"...on Bandcamp Fridays, an average of 93% of your money reaches the artist/label (after payment processor fees). When you make a purchase on any other day (as millions of you have, with close to $1 billion now paid directly to artists), an average of 82% reaches the artist/label. Every day is a good day to support artists on Bandcamp!"

Again, here's my site on Bandcamp: https://sleighwriter.bandcamp.com/music You can buy any individual track of mine for a measly $1, or you can buy my entire discography for $7.80 — less than eating at many fast food restaurants! Or just explore Bandcamp and find lots of interesting music! I've a couple recommendations for you on my bandcamp sidebar.

I've put something new on Bandcamp, but it's NOT music. https://sleighwriter.bandcamp.com/track/you-by-anonymous

This is a short story of mine that's always been a favorite to read aloud at conventions and readings. It's relatively short (about nine minutes) and complete unto itself. Unlike when I read a chapter or so from one of my novels, I don't have to give any context to the story, other than saying that Mike Resnick, the editor who invited me to submit a story to the anthology entitled "I, Alien," gave me only one restriction: given the anthology's title, I was to write a story from the first person viewpoint of the alien in the story.

Now, you'll notice that I actually didn't do that. I wrote the story in second person, as if the alien were narrating to the reader. Mike told me that while he really liked the story, what about the first person requirement? I told Mike that, hey, second person is just first person once removed. Mike gave an exasperated sigh and said "Look, you you have to put at least one 'I' in the story."

So I did, at nearly the very end. One lone 'I'. And Mike bought the story by return e-mail.

I've new track up on Bandcamp: https://sleighwriter.bandcamp.com/track/nises-theme

This began WAY BACK WHEN in the late 1970s when I wanted to write something that reflected my relationship with Denise. At that point in time, I was listening to a lot of ambient music and enjoying how the composers layered in track after track after track. The main melody I put together originally on piano when I was learning that instrument. I can't say I ever really succeeded in getting beyond the amateur stage with keyboards...

When Apple released Garageband in 2005, I picked up a piano keyboard I could plug into the computer and finally recorded the piece as well as I could remember it. As Garageband evolved, I added my guitar tracks, along with assorted loops and software horns and strings, to the piece, eventually ending up with 19 tracks and a ten-minute song. When Logic Pro arrived on the scene, I moved the whole project into that program and fiddled with it some more.

What you hear on this track comes from that long, interrupted compositional process. Hope you enjoy!

Welcome to Black Friday. But while you’re out shopping, keep in mind that every writer, musician, and fine artist only gets paid when someone purchases their product, be it a book, a song, or painting. There’s no ‘salary’ for entrepreneurs, no paycheck coming in weekly or monthly to pay bills and make financial ends meet… and you always won’t see our stuff in those retail shops.

So if you want to support the proverbial struggling artist, there’s only one way to do it…

As one of those entrepreneurs (especially now that I’ve retired from teaching), I’d point you in this direction: go to either one my websites (www.stephenleigh.com or www.farrellworlds.com). Hey, there won’t be any crowded parking lot or mall to deal with!

Under the “MY WORKS” header, you can find links to all the books that are currently in print and available from bookstores or online booksellers. Clicking on any of the covers will take you to a page that gives you information about that book to help you make your choice. Buying one (or several) will give me a percentage of the sale.

Looking for my out-of-print editions? Click on the BOOKSHOP header and you’ll be in my Square shop, where you can find hardcover editions of my books and series that are no longer available (even if the mass market paperback might be), as well as some entirely out-of-print books.

Go to the MUSIC header, and in the text there’s a link to my Bandcamp page. You can sample my original songs there… and you can buy them for a paltry $1 each (or buy them all for less than $1 each) and download them to your computer as well as receiving unlimited play of them on Bandcamp. Heck, if every one of you who sees this each bought just ONE song…

If artwork is more your thing, you can buy original art of mine, too. Hit the ARTWORK header, then the ARTWORK FOR SALE link on that page. There, you can see thumbnails and a description of each of the pieces as well as its (very reasonable) pricing; clicking on the thumbnail takes you to a larger version of the work. Buy one, and you own a one-of-a-kind original piece, not a copy.

Buying from an online bookseller or from Bandcamp, and they handle payment and delivery, not me. From the Square Bookshop or if you buy a piece of art, I’ll endeavor to ship such out ASAP via USPS -- so order early if you want it by the end-of-the-year holidays.

Go browse the website, and see if there’s anything there that catches your eye!

Home Welcome to my website. Feel free to browse around. Linger if you feel like it. I’d offer a libation or other refreshments, but the internet doesn’t allow that (not yet anyway). If you enjoy your stay, come back again and see what’s changed (hopefully I’ve been updating things). Tell anyone y...

No more 'ads' from me today. Today is a day for being grateful and giving thanks. I especially give thanks to Denise: my great friend, my lover, and my rock. She gives me unwavering support and she unhesitantly tells me when I'm heading in the wrong direction—and as much as I hate to admit it, she's always right. Denise, for your love and your presence, I am eternally grateful.

She's also given us two delightful and wonderful children, each of them out on their own with their own individual talents and passions, and each of them with their own excellent chosen companion. And again, for that, I also give thanks.

I'm grateful to family and for the network of good friends we both have. That network is too large for me to name each and every one of them, but knowing they are there with us is a unalloyed joy. Know that I treasure each of you for what you give, and know that today I will think of all of you and marvel at my good fortune.

Thanks!!

DARK WATER'S EMBRACE was originally published by EOS BOOKS (Harper Collins), March 1998. SPEAKING STONES was originally published by EOS BOOKS (March 1999). SPEAKING STONES is not precisely a sequel to DARK WATER'S EMBRACE, -- it takes place a century later and thus the main characters are not those of DWE, nor are the issues surrounding their conflict the same. Where DWE explored sexuality and the reproductive imperative, SPEAKING STONES explores cultural shifts, racial prejudice, and the inevitable conflicts that arise.

What I’ll be advertising here are hardcover editions which are now out-of-print, or older out-of-print mass market paperbacks. That third floor of ours is packed with those!

Bones of God -- mass market paperback (signed), $4.00

This was a 'serious' book made to look silly by a horrible cover on the original U.S. paperback edition (an ersatz Obi Wan Kenobi looking in a spaceship window). The Great Britain edition (which are the only copies I have left now) wasn't much better, alas. I love this title and still love the book (and I like the cover I put together for the online edition—see the cover on my website—much better than the original).

Thunder Rift - Mass Market PB (signed), $4.00

Matthew Farrell—whose named as the author of this—I decided, must be the older brother of S.L. Farrell who died tragically, lost in a bog in Ireland... But I'll skip the sad tale of why I used a one-shot pseudonym here. Ask me if you can catch me alone and I’ll give you the sad tale… Aside from the pseudonym, THUNDER RIFT also wasn't my original working title, which had been SILENCE. However, the marketing department at HarperCollins, in their infinite wisdom, said that my title was (and I quote them directly) "too quiet." They wouldn’t use it and re-named the book as THUNDER RIFT.

I really liked this novel, and I'd always wished that I'd published the book under my own name and with the original title, which I still thought fit the theme of the book much better. If you check my website, you’ll see I’ve done that via Arc Manor, a small press publisher. However, what you’ll be getting if you take this offer is the Harper Collins edition, pseudonym and pseudotitle. Everything else is what I wrote, though.
