I just worked with a brand new quilter. He was upset with a small part that wasn't "perfect." He had made it for a child of his friend who lives in Japan, where he was heading out tomorrow and was so upset he didn't want to give it to the 2-year-old child. I tried to remind him that there are no perfect quilts, that he had just started learning this craft, that little mistakes are part of a beautiful quilt. But it wasn't until I took the quilt away and asked if I had made it for him, would he give it back because of a few errors? Of course not, he replied...that's when it hit him the gift was made with love. Then I read this meme from Janis Ian. Such a perfect way of looking at building skills and knowledge.

As I was making this quilt last spring, the wonderful Wendy, the woman who cleans our house, kept telling me that these were her colors. She loved this quilt. As she only comes once a month, today was her Christmas with us. She was happily surprised with her gift (and she once again, as she was stroking and patting the quilt, told me these were her house colors LOL).

For the Love of Quilting

I fell in love with quilting with the first block I made.

While I was viewing my aunt’s many many quilts that were displayed at her memorial service in 2002, I thought hey, maybe I could do that. I had learned to sew by watching my mother make our family’s clothes. Mom was an expert seamstress. And then I took the required Home Economics class in junior high school and learned how to make scrambled eggs AND a wrap-around skirt. I was set for life: protein meals and clothing.

This quilting thing grabbed me in my heart at 43 and has never left. I feel that with each quilt I make, I am adding a bit more positive energy into the world. After all the family had at least one quilt, I started sewing for other babies and children through donations to local charities and organizations, and to adults in homeless camps.

When I retired I had even more times to make quilts. It was at that point we had a quilting studio built and I started using a longarm quilting machine as well as teaching a quilting class through Community Education at Portland Community College.
