Cargo is delighted to be partnering on “Balomania” with House of Real and Polar Star Films ahead of its World Premiere CPH:DOX in the Main Competition DOX: AWARD Category. Set in the heart of Brazil's favelas, filmmaker Sissel Morell Dargis gains unprecedented access to the hidden world of the “balloon mafia.” For baloeiros in Rio and Sao Paolo, hot air balloon construction, flying and chasing is a treasured and competitive art form -- as well as central to their sense of community and cultural heritage since colonial times. Now, authorities have made their art illegal, ranking them just below drug cartels in the law, and driving them underground. With police and bounty hunters hot on their heels, Dargis embarks on a wild ride to witness the extreme obsession and sacrifice required to build these spectacular balloons that reach over 70 meters high and that require over 100 people to launch into the sky. Intimate and explosive, ‘Balomania’ is a real-life action film about freedom against all odds that will challenge beliefs about favelas, gang life and the power of art.
‘Balomania,’ About Brazil’s ‘Balloon Mafia,’ Boarded by Cargo Ahead of CPH:DOX Premiere, Trailer Debuts (EXCLUSIVE) Cargo Film & Releasing has acquired 'Balomania,' which will have its world premiere in the main competition at leading European doc fest CPH:DOX.

Programmer's notes: “Engeli Broberg’s impressive debut feature documentary follows Gabi, a kid who is not interested in fitting into the mold of gender norms, from age eight to thirteen. Gabi believes all genders should be treated the exact same, should play on the same sports teams, and should be free to wear whatever styles of clothing they want. But having recently moved from Stockholm to a smaller and much more homogenous town, the pressure to conform becomes more acute.
Broberg cultivates a sense of deep trust when documenting Gabi’s profoundly vulnerable pr***en years. Formative moments such as the first time getting a short haircut, having a secret crush, and hitting puberty are presented with the care and compassion that matches their monumental emotional resonance in Gabi’s life. Framed as a letter to “future Gabi,” this five-year time capsule tenderly captures the uncertainty and the discovery of one’s pr***en years through the eyes of someone earnestly and openly figuring out who they are.”
Jon Sesrie Goff’s AFTER SHERMAN plays tonight , and it has already received extraordinary praise!!!
Programming notes: “Pure cinematic poetry informed by a history still to be conclusively reckoned with, After Sherman foregrounds the Southern Black experience while posing complicated questions about home and ownership that it isn't so presumptuous to believe it can readily answer. Instead, as a defiant impulse to create without compromise, injecting art world ideas into the documentary form, it serves as immersion in an “oppositional gaze,” and ultimately a challenge to conventional mass media characterizations and understanding of what it means to be Black in America.”
