Legends are forever
As we celebrate Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, we remember the lives of past Sikh Americans who made history, like Bhagat Singh Thind.
Bhagat was born in Taragarh Talawa, Punjab in 1892. At 21 years old, he moved to the United States to pursue higher education. He attended the University of California, Berkeley, and paid for his education by working in lumber mills in the pacific northwest over the summers.
In 1918, Bhagat was recruited to the U.S. Army to serve in World War I. He was the first turbaned Sikh to serve. After his service, Bhagat tried to become an American citizen but was denied twice by the Bureau of Naturalization. After almost two decades of appeals, Congress passed the Nye-Lea Act that permitted citizenship for veterans regardless of their race.
Bhagat earned his Ph.D. and became a respected author, philosopher, and professor during his citizenship process. He was in the process of writing another book when he passed away on September 15, 1967. His wisdom and perseverance continue to inspire Sikhs today.
