WOOL would like introduce Jackie Joyner-Kersee the six-time Olympic medalist who will be throwing out the first pitch at the NBBA 2024 World Series in St. Charles, MO.
Jackie Joyner-Kersee was born March 3, 1962 in East St. Louis, Illinois,
and was named after Jacqueline Kennedy, the First Lady of the United States. As a high school athlete at East St. Louis Lincoln Senior High School, she qualified for the finals in the long jump at the 1980 Olympic Trials, finishing 8th. Joyner showed great enthusiasm for athletics early on, and, as a teenager, she won the first of four consecutive National Junior Pentathlon championships. In high school she was a determined student and athlete, graduating near the top of her class and competing on the school’s volleyball, basketball, and track teams. As a junior, she set the Illinois high-school girls’ long jump record at 6.68 metres (20 feet 7.5 inches). Her high-school success led to a scholarship to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where she initially focused on basketball and the long jump.
Jackie attended college at UCLA and starred in both track and field and women's basketball from 1980 to 1985. A four-year starter on the Bruins' basketball team, she is still listed among the school's career leader in scoring average, rebounding, and assists. Joyner began training for the heptathlon in 1981 under the tutelage of assistant track coach Bob Kersee, whom she married in 1986. She received a bachelor's degree in history from UCLA in 1985.
Jacqueline Joyner-Kersee is a retired American track and field athlete, ranked among the all-time greats in the heptathlon as well as long jump. She won three gold, one silver, and two bronze Olympic medals in those two events at four different Olympic Games. Sports Illustrated for Women magazine voted Joyner-Kersee the Greatest Female Athlete of All-Time. She served on the board of directors for USA Track & Field (U.S.A.T.F.), the national governing body of the sport.
Joyner-Kersee is an active philanthropist in children's education, racial equality and women's rights. She is a founder of the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation, which encourages young people in East St. Louis to pursue athletics and academics. She collaborated with Comcast to create the Internet Essentials program in 2011, which provides high-speed internet access to low-income Americans.
Joyner-Kersee is one of the most famous athletes to have overcome severe asthma. In March 2023, she was inducted into the International Sports Hall of Fame.

Happy International Women’s Day from the Women of our League! We wanted to share a phenomenal woman who made strides in the sports community!

Meet Lusia Harris!
Lusia Mae Harris was born on February 10, 1955 in Minter Citer MS to Ethel Harris and Willie Harris who was a sharecropper in the cotton fields. She was the fourth of five daughters and the tenth out of eleven children. She began her basketball career in high school. (Fun fact: all of her brothers and one of her sisters played basketball as well!) Lusia won the Most Valuable Player award three years in a row. While playing basketball, she served as team captain and made the All-Star team. She is known for scoring 46 points in a one game and leading her team to the state tournament. After high school, she was recruited to play basketball at Delta State University in Cleveland MS.
While playing at Delta State, Harris was the only African American female on her team. During her first year at Delta State, Harris helped her team to a 16-2 record. Unfortunately their season ended without making it to finals. In the 1974-1975 season, Harris’s team qualified for the nationals in Harrisonburg VA. While there, Harris scored 138 points and 63 rebounds in four games and was named as the Most Valuable Player!
Harris ended her college career with 2,981 points and 1,662 rebounds. She also graduated holding 15 out of 18 of Delta State’s team, single game, and career records. In 1977, she won the inaugural Honda Sports Award.
In 1977, Harris became the only woman drafted by the NBA in history. She declined the draft due to personal reasons but later on went to play professional basketball with the Houston Angels in the late 1970’s.
Later on in life, Harris held various roles in the education spectrum. She served as an Admissions Counselor for Delta State and was also the Assistant Coach for their basketball team. She also served as the Head Coach at Texas Southern University. Harris died in January of 2022 just shy of 67-years-old.
Throughout her life, Lusia Harris accomplished amazing strides. In 1983, she was inducted into Delta State’s Hall of Fame for all of her contributions to the school. In 1992, she became the first ever African American woman to be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. In addition, Harris, her university coach, and fellow teammates were among the 26 inaugural inductees into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame.
Lusia Harris is a prime example of how women have made their mark in the sports community!! Stay tuned to learn more about more phenomenal women during Women’s History month!

Happy National Girls and Women in Sports Day!

Today is
National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness for and act as a reminder about the positive aspects of sports and the continued need to promote gender equality in every way.
The first National Women in Sports Day was established in 1987 when United States President Ronald Reagan declared the day to be set aside to acknowledge the important part that women play in sports.
Since its origins, National Girls and Women in Sports Day has evolved to recognize all female athletes, whether professional, amateur or simply aspiring. In addition, the day is meant to celebrate the progress that was made when Title IX was passed in 1972, providing equal access to sports for girls in the United States.
The inception of WOOL carries on this legacy as we promote athleticism amongst talented women in our Beep Ball organization! Join us as we reflect on this special day and shout out one of your fellow female athletes!

Happy White Cane Safety Day from the Women of our League!

White canes were introduced in the 1930s as a tool to assist blind or vision impaired pedestrians to travel independently. This long white tool also helped motorists identify and yield to individuals using the white cane, and the use of the white cane has been protected by US federal and state laws since that time. White Cane Safety Day, October 15, was established in 1964 by President Lyndon B. Johnson in an effort to raise awareness of people who carry or use a white cane. Today, we observe and celebrate White Cane Safety Day or “White Cane Day” by participating in walks, parades, social events, field day activities, and conducting informational presentations. You may often see white cane users traveling confidently and independently throughout their communities, in airports, and in restaurants. For the blind and vision impaired community, the white cane is not just a stick, it is a symbol of blindness and a tool for independence.

Happy Coaches Day from the Women of our League!

On September 19, 1972, President Richard Nixon delivered a proclamation establishing October 6 as National Coaches Day.

National Coaches Day honors the men and women who encourage and inspire us to work hard and do our best. Every sport or competition requires a strong leader. Specifically, a leader who knows the game and drives their athletes to work together as a team.

So to all the coaches in the NBBA and beyond, we’re wishing you a very happy Coaches Day; we see you, honor and appreciate you!

Join the Women of our League in observing National Blind Sports Month!

The blind community is kicking off October with National Blind Sports Month, an event which initially began with a blind sports day, and has quickly evolved into an entire month! Created by the United States Association of Blind Athletes (USABA) to draw attention to the numerous sports and recreational activities accessible to individuals who are blind or vision impaired.

So, if you’re not already involved in blind sports, this would be the perfect opportunity to learn about the various sports for us blind folks!
Let’s go!!!
