I am immensely proud of you. Mia made history tonight becoming the first deaf women with a cochlear implant winning the Official Miss SA crown.
Now, unless you are deaf and has worked with this community you will never be able to fully understand what it took and takes for her to just get to this stage, never mind winning! Unbelievable.
Mia, you inspire!! I can't wait to see what you are going to accomplish on this powerful platform.

As a child, the only anniversary I knew to celebrate was my parent’s wedding anniversary. I could not have imagined a . Today marks my 5th cochlear implant anniversary.
What was to be a very difficult year leading to the surgery, filled with uncertainty, anxiety and not wanting to face my reality, changed into the most magical and deeply connected experience of my life.
I have had 5 years of the most beautiful sounds and appreciation thanks to pioneer, Ingeborg Hochmair and MED-EL who dedicated her life to helping people with hearing loss.
Every day brings more challenges and opportunities to help others through my journey. It is the most wonderful gift I could have ever asked for making me stronger and more grateful for this life.

First time travelling internationally with my CI, the RONDO 3 from MED-EL. Why is this significant to mention and tag? This is a hearing implant medical device, a cochlear implant. Many people around the world do not know what it is and what it can do. (yes even medical doctors). My implant gave me back my hearing, I am profoundly deaf. But it also gave me back my life, confidence and independence. I can travel and I can work and do my job which I am so passionate about. It is time to speak up and to create awareness for people like me, about what the impact is on your life when you lose your hearing and the possible solutions.
This beautiful lady working at Qatar Airways assisted me in the most accommodating manner when I checked in for my flight. For those of you who don't know, we rely on lip-reading and a mask is a major communication barrier. Here I can hear perfectly with my RONDO 3! Thank you MED-EL South Africa and Qatar Airways!
