Parkour, Guns, Bombs, Cops, Jail Time - ParkourEDU (Photo by JC Gellidon) I haven’t told this story because frankly it’s a bit embarrassing how naive and oblivious I was that night a few years back. Recently I was reminded of it, and it stuck out to me as a story that needed to be told, an important contrast needing to be expressed. ... Read mor...

Tricking basics for parkour athletes - ParkourEDU After years of training and coaching gymnastics and cheer in Hawai’i, I started tricking in 2014. When I moved to Colorado in 2016, I began coaching at Apex Fort Collins––helping to build the acro/tricking program with my friend Sean Ingel. I spent the last year helping to build up the acro pr...
Fond memories, really miss these times right now, especially the time I lived in that abandoned elevator shaft (first clip) for a few weeks with Anthony Denis in Miramas, France.
Getting to our beds after exhausting night missions was brutal climbing up into this hole in the ceiling haha especially because you had to wedge yourself in enough to deal with a lock and key before doing a static underbar. So worth it though :)

🔫🦐 Balance x shrimp/pistol squat 🔥
3 main reasons why people struggle with pistol squats: poor ankle dorsiflexion (DF), lack of strength, limited pike mobility. If you need some easier, scalable pistol progressions, try:
⠀
▫️ top left | heel-elevated pistol if you lack ankle DF, gradually use less slope
▫️ top right | pole-assisted pistol if you lack strength, gradually use less upper body assistance
▫️ bottom right | elevated pistol if you lack pike mobility, gradually use less elevation
▫️ bottom left | box pistol if you lack ankle DF, strength, and/or pike mobility, gradually use a shorter box

If you can’t lift heavy right now due to covid19 closures, loaded shrimp squats are a clever, underrated, and minimalistic way to challenge your legs. They won’t fully replace back squat or deadlift but they’re better than nothing and can be done anywhere. A few variations:
▫️ top left | L2 jumbo shrimp (extra ROM) w/ kettlebell
▫️ top right | L1 goblet shrimp w/ dumbbell
▫️ bottom right | overloaded, eccentric L2 shrimp w/ weight dump at bottom + explode up
▫️ bottom left | L1 shrimp w/ weight vest

Drop to sprint is an underrated speed parkour drill!

Quick hands, quicker feet!
In 2016, we partnered with the Division of Kinesiology and Health at the University of Wyoming to deconstruct various parkour landing techniques. The study was just published by the Journal of Human Kinetics—and with free/open access for all!
In this study, landing forces and techniques by 20 parkour coaches and athletes from Apex School of Movement locations were analyzed using high-speed cameras and 3-dimensional coordinates set up at Apex.
When we got the news of publishing, we asked the lead researcher, Dr. Dai, a few follow-up questions:
Q: What do you think is the biggest takeaway from this study?
A: Landing from a high height does not necessarily result in injury if appropriate landing techniques are used. This finding has important implications for injury prevention for other athletes, as many injuries such as ACL and MCL injuries occur when athletes land from much less height.
Q: What kind of follow-up studies do you think would be most interesting/useful?
A: We would like to perform follow-up intervention studies with athletes who are participating in sports involving jump-landing activities such as volleyball, basketball, and soccer. We plan to quantify whether these athletes can safely learn parkour roll and landing techniques in a short period of time (about 1 week) and then execute these techniques to decrease lower extremity loading in landing. Our long-term goal is to implement this type of landing training program in many sports teams and to track whether it can help decrease landing related lower extremity injuries.
