A well written case for evangelism
The Week of April 14, 2024 — Church of the Good Shepherd If we were to adopt the geographical trajectory of St. Luke’s writings (his Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles), everything that happens before the resurrection of Jesus is intended to move towards Jerusalem. And afterwards, all action moves from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth. Thinking abo

Good news
It was very sad to wake up to the news that Bishop David Joslin had passed away. He was the Rector of Christ Church, Westerly, RI from 1974 (the year I was born) until 1987. And when he returned to Westerly many years ago after retiring, he became our Bishop in Residence.
There are very few people that have impacted my life as much as he has. He was always there to offer advice and cheer me on when I began taking leadership roles at Christ Church, and certainly since I’ve been the senior warden.
He was full of advice and support when I wrote my book on the church. He always supported my campaigns and my other events and activities, and I know he did that for a lot of people and was a great source of advice and comfort and knowledge. I’m going to miss the visits and the phone calls and the advice, but I can tell you that he instilled enough of his wisdom, in all of us that knew him to last a lifetime.
I can agree with these points
The Church usually calls for justice only in ways that are acceptable to the political left and theological liberals.
The Church’s rhetoric on social issues and current events is frequently indistinguishable from that of progressive political commentators.
The Church is quick to criticize evangelicals for conflating faith and politics, yet dedicates a far greater share of its rhetoric to political issues than do evangelicals.
In offering solely a progressive political message, the Church offers people nothing they cannot get from secular culture, which is one reason why it gains so few new members.
The progressive faction of the Church is seldom self-critical, except to repent of not being progressive enough.
We are hosting Fr. Albert Cutie from Plantation Florida here at Christ Church Westerly this weekend. What a great priest! He is featured in my book.

This a failed slogan. It’s actually pretty racist and insulting to me. Really look at what it’s saying. This is another reason we are dying as a church and It needs to end.
Just got this reply when I posted the new church membership numbers:
Caswell, I share your frustration and concern. I could write paragraphs here. I actually think parishes will have to decide to change this downward trend. Nothing of much substance will come from 815 Second Avenue, New York or from many of our diocesan offices. However, this doesn't mean we become congregational in our mindset. Churches that change the tide by actually preaching the Gospel, truly reaching out with the Gospel message, and meet the needs of the community through the lordship of the Risen Christ will need to be represented at diocesan and national levels or the same crowd that is burning down the house will continue. Such parishes will need to learn from each other and support each other through prayer and fellowship. In the process, we have to set aside our insistence on how right our particular churchmanship is over the other and remember how creedal orthodoxy ties us together. We have bigger fish to fry than squabbling about and defending our particular churchmanship. There are some glimmers of hope among some sectors of younger clergy and laity who are solidly credally orthodox. Caswell, I like how you showcased in your book churches who were doing some great things and attempting to change the trend. Again, we need to learn from each other, but also support each other through fellowship that involves regular communication.
This is pretty well done!

Episcopal membership rolls dropped 88,306 persons from 1,520,388 in 2021 to 1,432,082 in 2022, down six percent, the largest single year loss reported in memory. The denomination has now lost 23 percent of members in the past 10 years, a rate that is accelerating.
Do the math. 88k people lost. 1.4 million members.
We have 15.9 years left at that rate. That’s until we hit 0.
When will the leadership wake up?

Sometimes when you try to be so inclusive you actually alienate and exclude a much larger group. We should welcome all and not always separate people by race, gender and sexuality. People are people. Leave it at that.
If your parish has an average weekly attendance of under 100 you need to change what your are doing and I can help. Just email me and I’ll come speak to your parish! [email protected]
If you pick a political side and preach it, you have then alienated half the people.
Stick to the basics we can all agree on.
