My name is Lauren Lawrence. I am the founder of Stenovate. I’m also an RPR and a lover of all things steno. I have a deep, deep respect for the hard-working professionals (ahem...mainly bad a$$ women bosses) that make up the legal transcript community.
When I started reporting, I was lucky to find a few amazing proofreaders (who saved me a lot of embarrassing typos). A few years into reporting, after building up my dictionary, I decided to start using a scopist as well. All I can say is WOW, what a difference that made! Hands down, it was one of the best things I could do for myself, my family, my health, and quite frankly, my wallet! 💵
The time I saved not needing to scope and proof allowed me to accept work opportunities I would have declined to catch up on my page backlog. Work was pouring in (pre-COVID) and I was buried, but my team was providing “lift” and I was able to maintain some semblance of order through an obnoxiously detailed Excel spreadsheet. I tracked everything because I would undoubtedly forget if I didn’t write it down. (Who’s with me? 🙋♀️)
I tracked everything. Job date, due date, agency/client, job number (if applicable), paid or unpaid, page count, who scoped, who proofed, how much I owe my teammates, if I paid them yet, mileage, etc. This is my business. I need to know all these things!
Speaking of my business, I used a variety of other tools to work with my teammates. Dropbox to transfer files, Depobook at the jobs, email, texting, or Facebook messenger to communicate, etc. While I was smart enough to create a “system” to meet my needs, I’m a total glutton for efficiency, and I kept thinking, “There has to be a better way.”
I looked and looked for the perfect tool to organize my transcript details and make collaboration with my teammates easy. I found some pretty stellar project management tools that almost fit the bill, but there were all sorts of little nuances (because our profession is so unique) that didn’t quite make sense for our transcript work.
I couldn’t shake it. I wanted that tool. Not just for me, but for the whole transcript community. We all know this industry is short on certified stenographers, and I knew if we just had a system that allowed us to streamline our workflow, we could cover more jobs and (dare I say it) even stress less! I desperately wanted that for my community. So...I found help.
I’ll save the details for how it came to be for another day. The point is IT CAME TO BE. Stenovate was born to help reporters, scopists, and proofreaders simplify their lives. We’ve spent endless hours with amazing designers and developers to build a system catered to us!
