The Virginia Caples Lifelong Learning Institute staff, who serve older adults and their families, would like to remind you that the "open enrollment" period for Medicare ends on Wednesday, December 7.
This is a critical time for all Medicare recipients--individuals 65 years old and older, individuals with disabilities, and those with permanent kidney failure--to evaluate their healthcare needs and determine if their current plan provides for those needs.
During open enrollment, a recipient can enroll in a new plan, switch to a different plan, or drop a plan. As you make your plans, think about health changes that have occurred throughout the year. Are there health diagnoses that warrant changes to your health coverage? Could there be a plan to provide more coverage than the one you are enrolled in? Are your prescription drugs covered under your current plan? Do your preferred healthcare providers accept your insurance?
Each year for open enrollment (October 15-December 7), meet with a local insurance agent or a rep from the State Health Insurance Program to:
• Compare the 2023 Medicare plans.
• Ask about new plans or carriers servicing your geographic region and accept certain plans.
• Check the formulary (detailed list of prescribed medicines) for your plan to ensure it still fits your prescription drug needs.
• Ask about new plans or carriers that service your geographic region.
Medicare also has a 24-hour hotline with representatives available to assist you. Call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) / TTY users can call 1-877-486-2048. Or visit the website at https://www.medicare.gov/.
