Retired Fritz Pollard Alliance Chairman John Wooten talks about his initial attraction to Pittsburgh Steeler's head football coach Mike Tomlin with veteran sports broadcaster Lenny Moon. At the time of the discovery of Tomlin, who was an assistant at his alma mater William and Mary, Wooten was scouting Darren Sharper for his then-employer the Dallas Cowboys.
Wooten, a 60-plus year veteran of the National Football League, has always had an affinity for talent, be it on the gridiron, the sideline or the front office. During is all-pro career as blocker for three Pro Football Hall of Famer running backs (Jim Brown, Leroy Kelly and Bobby Mitchell) with the Cleveland Browns, he was coached by legendary Paul Brown. He encountered multiple battles against Green Bay icon Vince Lombardi and was on the same staff as a scout with Hall of Famer coaches Tom Landry and Jimmy Johnson. Wooten himself is a candidate for the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a contributor.
