Passive design strategies to eliminate or reduce the need for air-conditioning. Sustainable air-cond

Some Sunday inspiration from our mobile office:

During my travels, I find a lot of inspiration for building with local materials in the different regions. Yesterday I came across this abandoned village in the middle of nature.

In the less populated parts of Spain, we often come across abandoned buildings. The people have left and the buildings remained. The only thing you can find these days are broken stone walls, a few beams, and sometimes a piece of roofing: some planks and a layer of clay and tiles.

Two thoughts came to me:
- It is very beautiful that a building that is no longer in use changes into a pile of stones and wood.
- These days, it is very possible to live and work in a remote house: mobile internet, solar panels, batteries, compost toilet, hydrophyte filtration, and a water well. Is the market ready for this? Will "off-the-grid living" - developers soon be turning these projects into turn-key projects?

What do you think?

We are very proud of our updated portfolio on our website! The project scale ranges between 359 hectares of urban development in Botswana and a 92m2 house in the Netherlands. We are specifically proud of the 92m2 house; last year we worked hard to be able to offer our services to smaller houses. We specifically made the choice not to focus solely on the most luxurious villas and large buildings. Our vision is, if we can solve the puzzle of the average home, then we'll have more of an impact.

Of course, there is still a long road ahead of us, but we are proud of this milestone.

Chips recently opened their new shared office space in Roodehek Street, Cape Town. Climetric was involved with the thermal comfort design of the building, and now also lives there during office hours.

Winter comfort is provided through water-based underfloor heating. In summer, the floor system will switch to cooling mode, and a high tech façade system using comfort blinds and local hot air extraction will ensure that the building will be protected from the afternoon sun, while maintaining the spectacular views of Table Mountain.

The first thermal camera image shows the water pipes embedded in the floor, maintaining a winter temperature of 25°C. The second shows how the comfort blind reflects the internal temperature back to occupants, protecting them from cold glazed surfaces.

If you're looking for an amazing spot to work from, have a look at Chip's website (www.chips.capetown).

The Green School is a pioneer in environmental education, and an environmental leader for our future. It's a place where kids learn about sustainability through environmental stewardship, community engagement, and hands-on activities. Climetric has been involved in the creation of this beautiful, sustainable school campus. We assisted with passive design strategies and low-energy comfort systems, from concept design to the buildings being in use. Ensuring a natural, comfortable environment for the students.

We have got our first residential building BENG*-compliant! The design by Jasper Knoop has a BENG-challenging-double-story-South-East- orientated-fully-glazed facade overlooking the property. And we got it through with room to spare; a generic heat pump and minimal airtightness are used, giving the client more flexibility in system en design choices.

We have used our parametric design process. As a result of this process, the number of days to be warm was reduced from 121 to 36 days. And the days that it would be hot from 21 to 5 days. All of this without using any cooling.

Furthermore, by using detailed analysis, we could utilize the room height for stratification of the hot air in combination with a separate hot air extract fan which significantly improves the thermal comfort in the space.

(*BENG is the mandatory Dutch energy calculation required for council submission)

Green School South Africa welcomed its first batch of kindergarten and primary school students in February this year. The design pushed the boundaries of what is possible in Paarl's climate, with daytime temperatures in February regularly exceeding 37°C.

Thermally massive triple skin walls and clay floors, made from raw materials a stone's throw away from the site, are balanced with large windows to keep students connected to their surroundings.

The classroom floors themselves are chilled by cold water generated by solar-powered heat pumps, providing comfort throughout the day. Feedback from teachers at the school is that the children love playing on the cool floor during breaks.

Climetric is honoured to have been part, from early design stages onwards, of this truly inspiring project! Currently we are expanding our work field to the Netherlands for new challenging opportunities!
