Once upon a time, a very strong woodcutter asked for a job in a timber merchant and he got it. The pay was really good and so was the work condition. For those reasons, the woodcutter was determined to do his best.

His boss gave him an axe and showed him the area where he supposed to work.

The first day, the woodcutter brought 18 trees.

“Congratulations,” the boss said. “Go on that way!”

Very motivated by the boss words, the woodcutter tried harder the next day, but he could only bring 15 trees. The third day he tried even harder, but he could only bring 10 trees. Day after day he was bringing less and less trees.

“I must be losing my strength”, the woodcutter thought. He went to the boss and apologized, saying that he could not understand what was going on.

“When was the last time you sharpened your axe?” the boss asked.

“Sharpen? I had no time to sharpen my axe. I have been very busy trying to cut trees…”

Reflect on this:👇

Our lives are like that. We sometimes get so busy that we don’t take time to sharpen the “axe”. In today’s world, it seems that everyone is busier than ever, but less happy than ever.

Why is that? Could it be that we have forgotten how to stay “sharp”? There’s nothing wrong with activity and hard work.

But we should not get so busy that we neglect the truly important things in life, like our personal life, taking time to fulfill our hobbies, giving more time for our family, taking time to read, enhancing our skills, upgrading our knowledge, being aware of our strengths and weaknesses, spending time for our self-development and health etc.

We all need time to relax, to think and meditate, to learn and grow. If we don’t take the time to sharpen the “axe”, we will become dull and lose our effectiveness.

"I asked an elderly woman once what it was like to be old and to know that the majority of her life was now behind her.

She told me that she has been the same age her entire life. She said the voice inside of her head had never aged. She has always just been the same girl. Her mother's daughter. She had always wondered when she would grow up and be an old woman.

She said she watched her body age and her faculties dull but the person she is inside never got tired. She never aged. She never changed.

Remember, our spirits are eternal. Our souls are forever. The next time you encounter an elderly person, look at them and know they are still a child, just as you are still a child and children will always need love, attention and purpose."

Spanning over 36 acres along the Willamette River, the park is home to 100 Akebono cherry blossom trees that erupt into breathtaking bloom each spring just like the famous sakura cherry blossom trees of Japan.

The trees, which run from the Japanese American Historical Plaza to Friendship Circle, were planted in 1990 as a memorial to the Japanese Americans who were forced into internment camps during World War II.

Thirty-three years later, the trees are an iconic part of the park and Portland, drawing thousands of visitors to the waterfront each spring.

I have witnessed many last breaths... too many to count. When I am at the bedside, I know when someone is about die, I am able to educate, support, and prepare families. I can tell them there might be sounds or body movements, which are a normal part of the dying process, but can sometimes be startling and even scary. If I tell them ahead of time, I can hopefully remove some of their fear, and that is always my goal.

I am not startled by death, I am not surprised by death, and I am not afraid of death. I have the tools to help others whether they are dying, or preparing to say goodbye, and I feel confident in my place at those moments.

And yet... every time that last breath is taken, I still feel so amazed and sometimes even surprised by it all, especially the miraculous way the body knows what to do. What gets me every single time, is the loud silence that happens after... that's when it hits me... someone has died... a life has ended. This is big... it's huge... and I have so much respect for that moment.

I worry sometimes that I will lose that, but instead, I think my respect for life and death, has increased over time. I feel a need to honor each last breath, to sit quietly for a moment, to not rush anything, and to just breathe in the stillness of the room.

It is truly an honor to be with someone who is dying, and when I am invited to be at their bedside, I respect and appreciate them and those who are saying goodbye. I never take these sacred moments for granted. I hope I always feel this way...
