TL; DR: 🎁🫁
I began my 20’s diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension and Eisenmenger's syndrome. Confined to an invisible disability, constant pain and suffering were my interminable companions.
Throughout the decade I managed to produce music, play shows and with help from friends toured as often as I could. Some end it fast and some end it slower in smaller amounts.
After every tour I’d spend a week or more convalescing in a hospital, just waiting for the comedy to be finished.
March of 2011, hospitalized, wheelchair bound, struggling to breathe even with a CPAP strapped to my face, doctors planned on transferring me to hospice.
Absent of maudlin sentiment, this was to be the end of my life, and I was okay with that. When touring I’d write “DNR” on my forearm as a proclamation to EMT’s. Paramedics didn’t read my note once in Tucson, and now you’re tasked with reading this tome of a post.
On the morning of March 28th 2011 at around 5:00am I woke to a nurse asking if I’d want a lung transplant. I vacillated in and out of consciousness while signing forms then visited with my parents and my good friend Timi, to say goodbye. I didn’t expect to come back. Nor did I necessarily want to.
To be alone is to train for death.
At 3:05 that afternoon they made their first incision; on April fools day I woke up. Over the past ten years I’ve been able to achieve remarkable things and owe it all to science, naïveté and lasting friendships.
Life is a strange fu***ng trip. Take care of yourselves and each other.
