Black Hills Amateur Baseball League

Updates and Information about the Black Hills Amateur Baseball League (BHAL) The BHAL is a summer men's baseball league based in Rapid City SD.

Anyone 16 years or older is eligible to play. Teams typically play a 15-20 game schedule with a post season city and state tournament.

A successful 2020 season came to a close over last weekend. Even with a delayed start and a slightly shortened season, it was a good summer.
The BHAL welcomed the Diamondbacks to the league in 2020 and saw much improved Drillers and Angels teams. 2020 was a competitive season and a good year for building the league and we look to continue that success into the 2021 season.
With all of their games being close, the A's just edged the Drillers for the top spot after the regular season. The tournament played out differently though and saw multiple extra inning games. The Drillers came through the losers bracket to claim the championship with a 4 run victory over the D'backs. By finishing 1-2, both teams will advance to the state tournament that starts in Yankton next weekend. The D'backs will play the Yankton Tappers on Friday night, and the Drillers will play the Sioux Falls flying squirrels on Saturday night. Good luck to both teams, get a couple wins for the BHAL!

Update: The BHAL is moving forward with a 2020 season. We'll be delaying our start a couple weeks, but that shouldn't affect us too much. We have had a plan approved by the city allowing us to proceed, so we will be taking measures to reduce risk, and we will constantly monitor the Covid-19 situation and follow guidance of local authorities. If you're interested in playing this summer, give us a shout in the next week, as rosters are coming together, but we want to give as many as possible the chance to play ball. Look forward to being on the field soon.

Hey folks, just a quick update from the BHAL. We currently have not made any official decision regarding our 2020 season. We're hopeful to have a season this summer. We do somewhat have the benefit of time to see how things develop over the next 6 weeks. And we'll follow direction from the state association as well as local government guidance. Wish we had something more definitive at this point, but with the way things are going, maybe that's not all bad. We'll provide more updates as they develop. For now, just stay positive, hope to see you out there soon.

2017 was a good season for the BHAL, and we're looking to build on that success next season. Planning is already underway to make 2018 better. With that in mind, we're looking for 3 people who would like to be a team manger/coach next season. These roles would essentially be the head coach of a team and the main point of contact between the league and their individual team. So if you've got a group of folks who want to play ball, let us know! And there's nothing wrong with a player-coach! Send us a message or comment if you're interested or know someone who might be! The 2018 season will be here before we know it!

The A's lost to the squirrels 13-7 today and were eliminated from the tournament bringing the 2017 season to an official close. It was a good season of baseball and we'll hope to build on that in 2018. We may post some updates in the off season as necessary. Let us know if you've got any interest in playing next year, we're always wanting more guys out playing ball. See you next year!

The A's gave it a good show against the Brewers but came up short 7-4. The Brewers pulled ahead in the middle innings, but the A's answered with 4 runs. Zac Smith had another good performance in a state tournament game. The A's got the tying run to the plate in the 9th but came up just short. They'll take on the Sioux Falls Squirrels to stay alive at 11:00 on Sunday. Good luck to the A's.

The A's lost in their 2nd game in the state tournament yesterday to the Sioux Falls Brewers. Not much to say about that one, the Brewers are pretty good team. The A's will try to stay alive in the tournament with a game this Friday, August 12th in Mitchell. They play the Castlewood Ravens at 1:30 at Drake Field. Good luck A's.

07/08/2016

Zac Smith does it again! The A's won their first round game in Aberdeen 4-0 over a tough Sioux Falls Saints squad. Smith was on his game again throwing a complete game only allowing 4 hits, and 6 Ks. Shortstop Parks Brigman led the way offensively for the A's going 2-3 with 2 RBIs and a run scored. The A's will play tomorrow at 1:30 against the winner of tonight's game between the Sioux Falls Brewers and Sioux Falls Squirrels. No matter the outcome of that game, they will play at 1:30 next Friday in Mitchell. Nice work A's, on to the next one!

31/07/2016

And the A's take game 2! Randy Hughes went 6 strong innings for the A's and Matt Bowman took care of the last 3 to preserve the win. The A's took a 9-5 lead into the 9th when the Royals pieced together some hits and pulled to within 9-7 but Bowman worked out of it. The A's advance to next weeks state tournament in Aberdeen.

30/07/2016

The A's take game 1 over the Royals with a 5-4 win. Zac Smith pitched a complete game gem for the A's and Cooper Walton gave a gutsy effort in relief for the Royals over 7+ innings. The Royals got the tying run to third in the 9th but Smith got a ground out to end it. Game 2 is underway!
