The best people possess a feeling for beauty, the courage to take risks, the discipline to tell the truth, the capacity for sacrifice. Ironically, their virtues make them vulnerable; they are often wounded, sometimes destroyed.

On July 6, 1957. John Lennon and Paul McCartney met for the first time at The Woolton Church Parish Fete where The Quarry Men were appearing. As The Quarry Men were setting up for their evening performance, McCartney eager to impress Lennon picked up a guitar and played ‘Twenty Flight Rock’ (Eddie Cochran) and ‘Be-Bop-A-Lula’ (Gene Vincent). Lennon was impressed, and even more so when McCartney showed Lennon and Eric Griffiths how to tune their guitars, something they'd been paying someone else to do for them.

Nurse leader and Radiology Manager Debbie Cordiner has wrote the following about Ophthalmologist David Sabiston who passed away last week. David helped so many people in Tairāwhiti to see again.

"For those of you that remember Dr David Sabiston (“Sabo” to many of us) who worked here at Tairawhiti District Health between approximately 2005- 2008 I would encourage you to remember the great man, and the exceptional service he provided to many patients here in our community.

Sabo passed away last week, a day after his 91st birthday.
Dr Sabiston was widely known and appreciated in the world of Ophthalmology, assisting many patients on the Coast, Gisborne and the Hawkes Bay areas to see again. He worked in very remote places all over the world, helping give sight to disadvantaged communities.

I first learnt of Dr Sabiston as a very small child. His name was very popular in our home growing up. He successfully operated on my mum and provide her with a corneal graft and the gift of sight when she had two very young daughters. We heard a lot about Dr Sabiston and his professional skills, but most importantly his kindness to my mum as a patient of his when she was nursed in the Hawkes Bay hospital for 7 weeks while the graft took. It’s not surprising that that graft is still intact today.

I was always fascinated by “eyes” so it wasn’t really surprising that my nursing career took me down the path of Ophthalmology where I became the Eye Nurse here for 14 years.

At one of the Ophthalmology conferences Sabo was the guest speaker. He talked about being the Ophthalmologist/Doctor for the 2000 Olympic Games. His speech was fascinating and highly entertaining (not surprising if you know Sabo).

As everyone left the room for a morning tea break I stayed behind and introduced myself to Dr Sabiston. I told him who I was and he immediately know who my mum was. We chatted about his career, and he asked me how things where in Gisborne. I explained that we were struggling to find as Ophthalmologist. He informed me that he might be interested in doing a locum to “help out”.

I was thrilled and couldn’t wait to get back to Gisborne to put the wheels in motion. We ended up having Sabo come to Gisborne for about 3 years. He would come 2-3 days a week and help out. He wasn’t a young man at this time, but he provided an amazing service to the people of Tairawhiti during a very difficult recruiting period.

Sabo was liked by all that worked with him. The outpatient girls remember some very funny stories shared over morning tea breaks. He would take a 15 minute nap in the Eye clinic after lunch that would recharge him to get through the afternoon clinic.
The patients of the Tairawhiti region have benefited hugely from the professional skills of this great Ophthalmologist. There will be many patients that remember him and what he did for them. I know I was very thankful to have him help us out as he did, and to have him as a friend.

Sabo is survived by his wife and very loving family.

RIP Sabo.

Kiwi act Coconut Rough created synth-pop at its finest. Their single 'Sierra Leone' was a runaway it in 1983, and filled plenty of dance floors in its time — but the success of the track became a difficult one to follow up.

As lead singer Andrew McLennan told our sister site AudioCulture "'Sierra Leone' became the only song from our repertoire that people wanted to hear and no matter what we did we couldn't follow it up." Watch it here: https://bit.ly/43iO2FE
