The 'Action for Proportional Representation' is a non-partisan initiative proposing a feasible plan on how Canadians can simply change the Elections Law.
Proportional Representation is a simple math that distributes the representative seats in the Parliament according to the percentage of the votes cast in the general elections. It makes perfect sense, it is simple to understand, it is fair and would result in a much more representative government. It would eliminate the 'strategic voting' that many Canadians find themselves compelled to do; essent
ially voting against the party they hate the most, instead of voting for the party that represents them the best. Best of all, it would eliminate anomalies such as we have today: a 'Majority' Conservative Government based on less than 25% of the eligible Voters! Why is that the opposition parties talk about Proportional Representation, but the parties holding the most seats (and can actually enact it) always find reasons explaining how it is not the right time to do this? The reality is that those parties would lose seats, which would be re-distributed to the smaller parties. No party leader in his/her right mind would ever do that. Stephen Harper has once supported PR, and now he won't even mention it. The Liberal Party is now talking about PR (see in the table above how it would benefit them now..). They were in power for 13 years and did not care much, and if they ever get a majority government, they will 'forget' again! The explanation is simple math: big parties stand to lose, therefore it will never happen, no matter how much the politicians will bend over backwards and forwards to promise the voters that they're better than the others. Politicians don't want to lose their powers. What we are proposing here by-passes the politicians! There are numerous political advocacy groups who talk about Proportional Representations, promoting petitions and other forms of protest, but they are all begging politicians to make promises and then keep them. This is different - no more begging.. The draft Elections Law proposed squarely enacts Proportional Representation, plus the Right to Recall, the Right to Initiative and the Right to Select Candidates. It will be passed by the next Parliament as the only item on the agenda and it is expected to take maximum 2 weeks to resolve. After that, the MP's who have signed the Contract will resign and call new Elections. We will finally have a new Parliament more Representative (seats allocated based on Proportional Representation), Accountable (Right to Recall), Responsive (Right to Initiative) and Local (Right to select Candidates). This Action will not only enact a new Elections Law; it will prove to Canadians and to the world that the politicians can be overruled by the will of the voters. They can no longer take their powers for granted. Note: 'Action for Proportional Representation' is not a political party or a political organization. It is just an online index or Voters and Candidates who have made a commitment to reform the Elections Law based on the Contract presented.
