Andrea del Verrocchio enjoyed the patronage of three generations of the Medici family, beginning with Cosimo and ending with Lorenzo. Cosimo’s son, Piero, commissioned Verrocchio to create this sculpture of the biblical king David. Verrocchio’s sculpture of David may have been a complement to or rival of Donatello's earlier bronze of the same subject, which was also owned by the Medici family.
See this sculpture in “Verrocchio: Sculptor and Painter of Renaissance Florence” on view on the Main Floor of the West Building through January 12, 2020: go.usa.gov/xVAzr
Andrea del Verrocchio, “David with the Head of Goliath,” c. 1465, bronze with traces of gilding, Museo Nazionale del Bargello, Florence
