Black entrepreneurs have widely been underfunded, under-resourced and represented across various sectors. Now, a hub specifically dedicated to the empowerment of Black business owners is now among the largest in the world with that driving mission, and it’s being led by Black women.

The Russell Innovation Center for Entrepreneurs (RICE) recently announced the appointment of Shawn M. Graham, CPA, as Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer along with Monica Delores Hooks, MBA, EDP, as Chief Experience Officer, per a news release.

Launched in 2018, RICE was created as a business incubator to galvanize and support local African-American entrepreneurs as they grow, scale and create jobs through their endeavors. This recent milestone is a testament of the teams efforts.

“Atlanta instills a profound sense of pride and responsibility,” says Monica Delores in a statement. “At RICE, we’re building a community that provides founders with the comprehensive support I once only dreamed of. It’s an honor to contribute to the narrative of Black excellence and innovation in the city that shaped me.”

Shawn M. Graham, who previously worked with National Black MBA Association, Inc. (NBMBAA) also joins RICE to ensure its continued growth.

Among many programs, one of RICE’s marquee offerings is its Supply Chain Accelerator, which focuses on contract readiness and connection with government contract opportunities.

Entrepreneur Channing Beumer wants to take women’s love for sneakers to new heights with her women-focused sneaker boutique Shop CNK, which is set to open its doors later this year in Dallas.

In 2016, Beumer launched Chicks ‘n Kicks Daily, a blog-turned-media company that gives women who love fashion and sneakers a community and digital platform where they feel seen. She didn’t know a mass of women were hoping and waiting to come across a space like hers. Now, eight years later, her brand has grown to become a pillar in the female sneakerhead community. She plans to open the first Black woman-owned sneaker boutique focused on female consumers, offering them a one-of-a-kind retail experience. She recently sat down with Blavity to share her journey to expanding her organization into a tangible location.
When Beumer created the brand nearly a decade ago, things were shifting in her life. She noticed any time she Googled women and sneakers, the same images surfaced: women in a pair of kicks serving s*x appeal. She felt that women like her, who love sneakers and streetwear, weren’t represented in mainstream media.

“All I saw were girls in bikinis and Js. I did a Google image search and I very much felt like, ‘Okay, this ain’t it, this ain’t you.’ It was very much from the male gaze,” she said. “And so we just started this conversation series with girls that I knew and I liked. We were doing these photo shoots with them in sneakers and I look back at some of them and cringe. I’m like, ‘Ew, that was so whack.'”
The University of Minnesota alumna wanted to switch the viewpoint at that time from a male-centered perspective to a more inclusive one targeted toward the everyday woman.

Singer Alicia Keys is using her platform to help further racial equality. She has launched a new $1 billion endowment fund aimed at supporting Black businesses and communities.

The new fund will come as several crises unfold around the world, including the global coronavirus pandemic and the protests against systemic racism and injustice that were sparked by the police killings of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and others.

During an interview with Billboard, she commented, "We are already seeing the blatant injustices that are going on around us. As an artist, I’m always thinking about how can I use my platform to further racial equity. This fund is one of the answers and our goal is to empower Black America through investing in Black businesses, Black investors, institutions, entrepreneurs, schools, and banks in a way to create sustainable solutions."

She continued, "The initial goal of $1 billion is to ensure a substantial commitment," Keys says. "Even with that it does not come close to closing the economic gap. The next steps are to reach out to different industries to invite them to invest in racial justice and create a multi-billion dollar endowment across business sectors."

Black Ex-NFL Athletes Land Historic $20M Series A Funding From Google Ventures For Their VR Gaming Company.

By POCIT - PEOPLE OF COLOR IN TEC

Black-owned StatusPRO has reached a historic milestone with a $20 million Series A funding round from Google Ventures (GV), making it one of the largest Series A of any VR gaming company.

StatusPRO
StatusPRO was founded by Andrew “Hawk” Hawkins and Troy Jones, who each had a unique journey that propelled them into the tech space as Black co-founders of a budding startup.

Leaning on their experiences as former athletes, the duo wanted to help others better understand what it takes to compete at the highest levels from an athlete’s first point of view.

Their vision manifested into developing Pre Game Prep, a training product for NFL club coaches and players.

From there, they applied similar technology to build new applications to provide the most immersive and entertaining first-person sports simulations for sports fans and to represent Black founders in gaming.

In 2022, StatusPRO launched the first-ever NFL and NFLPA-licensed virtual (VR) simulation gaming franchise, NFL PRO ERA.

This franchise allows players to experience what it feels like to be on the field playing as the quarterback of their favorite NFL team.

NFL PRO ERA is among the most successful Black-founded gaming franchises ever.

Since its launch, StatusPRO has gained over 1,000,000 users.

Players have spent an average of 41 minutes in the game, estimated to be two times longer than the VR industry averages.

The two have secured funding from celebrity investors, including LeBron James, Naomi Osaka, and Drake.

This Black Entrepreneur Turned Her Pandemic Hobby Into A Thriving Ice Cream Shop, Sydney's Ice Creams - Blavity

By Aria Bell

Sydney Newton, a former server who lost her job during the pandemic, birthed a new business from spending quality time with her kids in the kitchen.

The entrepreneur used to work at The Capital Grille, an upscale steakhouse, before COVID-19 forced the world to shut down for safety concerns, according to https://buff.ly/3Snnhw4. Like most restaurants during that time, her previous employer could no longer host guests, which caused them to let go of their employees. A new stay-at-home mom, she focused on her children’s education as it turned into virtual learning sessions to ensure their success. Since there wasn’t much for people to do besides watch TV or take a walk in the park, she decided to start making ice cream with her children as a fun activity to pass the time.

Although the mother of two initially wanted to keep herself and her kids entertained, she began to thoroughly enjoy creating different types of ice cream.

“They loved it, and I did too. I loved that you could do so many things with ice cream. You can experiment with flavors, textures, smells and colors,” she told https://buff.ly/3Snnhw4. “We started delivering the ice cream to my sister and my mom, and they told me I should put it on Instagram to deliver it to more people, and we did.”

After creating an account on the platform, their new hobby turned into a small business, Sydney’s Ice Creams, that will now have a physical home. Until her storefront opens, the businesswoman is offering local community members ice cream two out of seven days in the Belair-Edison neighborhood at 3432 Belair Road. Some of the flavors available are Roasted Cherry Cheesecake with Biscoff Cookies, Chocolate Espresso with toasted meringue and Biscoff cookies and a dairy-free lemon sorbet called Winter Citrus. She’ll also be adding new ice cream options to her roster to get feedback from patrons. The grand opening is expected to take place on April 1.

“I think something as fun as an ice cream shop where people can come together and enjoy each other’s company is what the neighborhood needs,” she said. “I think it’s going to help revitalize the neighborhood, and hopefully it will encourage other business owners to come into the neighborhood.”

According to https://buff.ly/2OMC1nt, Vontélle emphasizes that its frames are designed to enhance the varied features and the individuality of its wearers. The official collection comprises 15 frames, each boasting vibrant, daring designs that make a bold statement, catering to both men and women.

Megan Molony, the senior vice president, chief merchandising and managed care officer at National Vision, emphasized that glasses should fit each wearer well.

“Glasses are not a one-size-fits-all product,” Molony said, per https://buff.ly/2OMC1nt. “The fit and style of glasses are just as important as the lenses within them. Glasses are not meant to hide who you are and should instead be a reflection and celebration of everything that makes you unique. We chose Vontélle for this collaboration because they share our passion for empowering eyeglass wearers to showcase their culture and personality through their eyewear.”

The names of the frames within the collection draw inspiration from influential African American figures who have made substantial contributions across a wide range of fields, including civil rights, literature, science, politics, law, innovation and public service, per Black News.

Business Is Booming For Black Entrepreneurs Thanks To The Detroit Lions' Winning Streak, Yet They Are Being Left Out Of The Economic Conversation.

By SHANIQUE YATES - AfroTEC

As the Detroit Lions’ path to Super Bowl LVIII continues, the place dubbed the “Motor City” has seen an influx of fans trekking to the downtown area, patronizing local restaurants to cheer on their NFL team.

Per a report from Detroit journalist Phil Lewis, the New York Times recently released a story exploring the local economic boost that has resulted from the Lions’ winning streak, yet not a single Black-owned business is mentioned.

That’s while Black people make up 77.8% of Detroit’s population, per the U.S. Census.

What’s more, the omission of Black-owned businesses isn’t because the city doesn’t have any, according to Lewis’ blog, What I’m Reading. In fact, one business was reportedly interviewed for the NYT piece, Cutter’s Bar & Grill. Located in the Eastern Market neighborhood, the pub was opened in 2004 and has been home to Detroit fans ever since.

When Detroit historian and news reporter Ken Coleman brought attention to the omission of the city’s Black businesses in a Facebook post, a manager at the pub commented that she had actually interviewed with the NYT.

“I’m very disappointed to hear this,” Chimika Harris said in her comment. “The NYTimes did an interview with me for this on Friday.”

For the past 20 years, Charles Nolen, the owner of Cutter’s, recalls being a big motivator in getting team supporters, especially the younger generation, to the downtown area, alongside other Black-owned businesses such as Bert’s Marketplace.
