Tomorrow, April 4th, is Equal Pay Day, an annual global event to raise awareness of the gender pay gap. Equal Pay Day marks the day the average woman must work to catch up to what the average man earned in 2022. It takes a woman 15.5 months to earn what a man made in 12 months. This date has shown little improvement despite decades of effort and empty promises by governments.
Although pay equity is the law in Ontario women continue to earn almost 32% less than men on average. This pay gap affects women of all ages and education levels. Black and racialized women, Indigenous women, 2SLGBTQI+ women, and women living
with disabilities face the greatest wage disparity.
o Women with disabilities make 56% less than men.
o Immigrant women = 55 % less than men
o Indigenous women = 45%
o Racialized women = 40%
