One of my favorite projects this summer has been my Detective Princess Peach from Princess Peach Showtime, so here is some construction notes on the Deerstalker Hat!

The hat itself I modified a pattern by and decided to use synthetic wool, flannel, and some canvas for additional structure. I flatlined the canvas to the flannel for the hat lining and it provided just the right amount of structure I was looking for.

My Activa 125S did some heavy lifting sewing through all the layers of fabric and this hat is absolutely one of my favorite pieces I've made all year!

How about a tutorial post?!

My Lambert cosplay was super well received at Otakon so thank you to everyone who came up and complimented my build πŸ™I wanted to share a quick tutorial on how I made the tarot cards for the costume since they were super easy but I think we're a really fun prop to have.

They're all made of regular printer paper if you can believe it!

All I did for this was download high res images from the official Wiki, print them out on paper, use my ruler to carefully cut the excess paper, tape the two halves together, and use some cricut transfer tape to carefully laminate them. My metro card also came in clutch to smooth out any bubbles as I laminated the paper, but any card would work. Thats it! Just paper, double sided tape, and transfer tape and you have some legit looking CotL tarot card props πŸ‘

Otakon is in a month and I've got four costumes to finish so that means it's officially con-crunch season!

Thankfully I was able to use the flower crown of my Hannah Alexander Bloom costume as the example for my flower crown workshop tutorial so I can officially check both off the list!

If you want to learn how to make a flower crown then be sure to stop by my workshop during Otakon, exact day/time TBD.

I feel like a lot of the same skills are going into my current Totoro build, especially the struggle with crystal organza. Oh how I both love and hate crystal organza 😌

Construction Notes for Dandelion Pluto!

First of all I have to give a major shout out to Breathlessaire for designing the Sailor Moon concept, making our group's dandelions, and also writing fantastic construction notes for all the dresses.

Now I'm gonna condense it into one small summary post because I've gotten a lot of questions after posting my build Instagram Story Highlight. Tbh my stories go into more detail but it's nice to have a WIP post on feed. The core of the dress is made of crystal organza and believe it or not there's at least 18yds in the dress. The ruffle hem itself is 4.2yds of fabric sewn into a long 25yd hem that I hand gathered. Speaking of the ruffle, that was probably the absolute most time consuming part of the build, taking over 10hrs just to gather down to size, and I easily several additional hours French seaming all the pieces together and binding the ends with my serger 😒

The rest of the dress relied on a lot of circumference math, and as a result, waiting for the skirt to hang on the bias so it could be leveled after stretched for a few days. The bodice uses a commercial pattern base with the crystal organza flat lined to the duponi for the outer layer, a layer of coutil for structure (canvas would have worked but I had plenty of coutil on hand), and then lined in the same duponi.

This project while it only tool a week to build and was not technically difficult, definitely tested my sanity on circle math and really made me wish I'd just finally buy a ruffler foot for my sewing machine 🀣

Absolutely obsessed with the photos Kara got of my Retro Space Sailor Mercury!

We ran into several issues right before the shoot (my shoe broke, AND our original photo location plan was closed) but we made it work and I honestly can't believe these were taken in the tiny arcade by the hotel pool. The whole set is really cool and I can't wait to share more!

When you find an excuse to re-wear your wedding dress πŸ€—

19 days till Katsucon!

Today is my Cosplay Couture Gala Catwoman! This was my build for the 2020 event where the theme was "Royal". I designed the outfit myself after falling in love with this ombre sequin fabric. It was a pain to sew but such a pretty dress!

Katsucon Throwback! Remember when I cosplayed a plant dragon??

This is Moreremoth from Guild Wars 2! I made this costume for Katsu 2018... and then promptly never wore it again because it was kinda uncomfortable πŸ˜… but she lives on as I used the cape for my Shrek vest!

The costume was my second ever attempt at armor and features eva foam, black worbla, thibra, model magic, and apoxie sculpt as the construction materials. Let's just say it was a big learning experience and fun to try out different materials but I don't reccomend using model magic on your armor cosplays! The skirt I actually repurposed from my cubone cosplay and just added a front panel to because that was several pieces hand-sewn together skirt and it fit the plant dragon vibe.

Fun(?) fact, I painted most of this in 48hrs and it was awful. Don't do that friends πŸ˜‚

Dreaming about spring ☺

Checked the weather today and it's nearly 25° warmer than it was last week 😡. Can't believe how lucky we got with snow at Magfest last weekend!

Here is a throwback to my last National Harbor con, Station-Unity back in August. Had a great time wearing my comfy school uniform Ami from Sailor Moon costume I made the week of the con.

Sansa Construction Notes Pt 1!

This has been my big build for January and I was so happy to wear her to Magfest even if there is some stuff I still want to eventually add.

Skirt: I used Simplicity Patterns 5006 as the pattern which I've made several times so I knew I liked the fit. I did have to add a panel on either side of the center to get it to fit on my 45in wide quilted fabric. I bought quilt backing for this project because 1) it provided a template for the quilting part of the project, and 2) it was additional layer between the hoop skirt and 3) held the shape of the skirt well with the additional weight of all the rhinestones.

The front panel of the skirt I used a metallic gray thread to emphasize the quilt lines (went through 4 bobbins 😡). Then I added rhinestones in four different colors: clear, clear AB, black, and black pearl AB using a diamond pattern to evenly spread each color. The bottom of the skirt is finished with a 4.5in wide strip of the gray faux fur used on the cape.

Belt/underbust: I started with McCalls M2069 which is an underbust corset pattern and its fine, but personally not my favorite. I started with curing the center two four pieces out of the yaya han stretch pleather then backed with satin for stability. Then the rest of the pieces were cut from regular pleather. Then I cut all the pieces again in coutil for my stability layer and satin for the lining. The center mini "belts" are made from the same stretch pleather as the center fabric, interfaced and edge stitched and sewn to the center panel. I then trimmed so a shape I liked then used the same silver piping I made for the base shirt on the belt when I sewed the three layers together after cutting the 1/4in steel boning. More step by step of this is in my Sansa highlight on IG.

Cape: the cape was probably the simplest part of the build, I bought 3yds of knit fabric that I liked the drape of, folded over the top edge to make a channel, then used a safety pin to feed elastic through. Then on each end I used my chain pleather trim fabric sewn to the ends of the elastic then sewed the edges shut. The pleather trim then attaches using a metal clasp on the back.

The faux fur I used 's "Vinter" GoT pattern to shape my faux fur until I liked the shape. Best trick is to cut from the back so there is minimal shedding. I actually origibally cut the head hole too big so I re-attached it using a blanket stitch then cut again. This then is tacked to the front of the cape to secure in place.

Pt 2 tbd, I still have to re-dye part of her πŸ₯΄
