Phil Ward coined the term “Mr. Potato Head” around the time he was developing drinks for our very first menu back in 2006. The term has since become industry parlance for taking an established cocktail recipe and swapping out one or more components to create something familiar, but new.
A great early example of this approach is Phil’s Elder Fashion, which replaces all three elements in a classic old-fashioned with new ingredients.
We’re making the Elder Fashioned tonight with the recipe linked in our bio. Cheers, friends!
GIVEAWAY!

Nights at Death & Co in the early days were punctuated by an unrelenting beat. The pace at which seats emptied and refilled, the speed with which drinks were poured and slid across the marble bartop. The minute-by-minute balancing act, starting and ending in the earliest hours of the morning, of prep repairs training R&D admin inventory deliveries mise pre-shift doors drinks forever last call closing clean up tips beers home. Exhilarating, exhausting, inspiring, repeat.
Over time, processes are put in place, additional hands are hired, and systems are installed to take that velocity of stress down a few (or more!) notches. We've learned a lot since those first few years — we're still learning, every day. Looking at the pages of our first book brings us right back to that intensity, that drive, that pace. We're grateful to be able to reminisce (thanks !), but even happier that we're still here and afforded the opportunity to be better with each new day.

We’re celebrating the 10th anniversary of our first book ( ) by sharing some of our favorite (and lesser-known) recipes from Death & Co: Modern Classic Cocktails throughout the month on the Death & Co Market blog. First up? ’s Maggie Smith, a riff on Between the Sheets, a classic made with equal parts rum, cognac, and orange liqueur, plus lemon juice. Inspired by a scene in the 1982 Agatha Christie adaptation “Evil Under the Sun,” which starred the late Maggie Smith, Joaquín swapped in pisco for cognac and replaced some the orange liqueur’s sweetness with orgeat and honey syrup, creating a more layered, citrusy drink.
