Sitting on the toilet is a great position in labour. When we sit on the toilet our pelvic floor naturally relaxes because that’s what our body is conditioned to do when on the toilet. It is also great because when sitting upright baby’s head puts more pressure on the cervix to help it dilate! Also, emptying your bladder regularly also gives more space for baby’s head to move down! The amniotic sac is a thin but tough transparent pair of membranes that hold a growing baby. The inner of these membranes is the amnion which encloses the baby and contains the amniotic fluid. The outer membrane, the chorion, contains the placenta and promotes the exchange of nutrients and other necessary fluids between the mother and the baby.

If you want a normal/physiological birth with minimal intervention you know where to go… the further away you move from the hospital system the greater your chance of a normal birth. This was found to be true in this Australian study (maternal and perinatal outcomes by planned place of birth in Australia) and also in a study in the UK (The birthplace in England study. If you Google both of these they are open access. Not only are you chances of a normal birth nearly 6 x higher than if you give birth in hospital, but the outcomes are equivalent. So, the home setting offers the same level of physical safety than hospital, but with a significant reduction in the use of intervention in order to achieve the same outcome.
In this study, the authors state that ‘there were no statistically significant differences in the proportion of intrapartum stillbirths, early or late neonatal deaths between the three planned places of birth’. So, if you want to increase the chances of a normal birth, follow the science, use the research and choose a place that will give you the opportunity. The link to the study is in my bio.
