AviatrixA

An online shop featuring aviation designs for female pilots and women in aviation. Great gifts! And, we strongly believe the future is female.

AviatrixA was founded in 2015 by a female pilot looking to make extra funds for flight lessons. It was called Aviatrix Tees and was a very small online store specializing in t-shirts for female pilots. Life got in the way and the store languished, until the worldwide pandemic hit. A year into COVID restrictions and getting very little flying done, the idea for re-launching the store blossomed and

Meet our FEARLESS FEMALE FRIDAY FIRST SOLO pilot Jerra Johnson!

Jerra soloed on January 23 at KPKB, Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Airport (West Virginia) on Runway 21 on what looks like a very cold day! She writes:

"I’m a recent high school graduate ( May '23). I fell in love with aviation about a year ago! I thought I wanted to work in ATC but then I went on a discovery flight and immediately fell in love."

"After high school I was fortunate to get a job at River Town Aviation! I’m the head aviatrix of the flight school and I help in our shop at well (River Town Aircraft Service). I’ve worked here since August and it’s the best decision I’ve ever made. I love all the people I work with and they help me strive to be a better pilot."

"I wouldn’t be in the aviation world without these people: Will Turned, Josh Wilson, Seth Bertram, Steve Peters, Andy Danials, Alex Martinsen and Keaton Thompson. All of them have given me opportunities I couldn’t have dreamed of in a million years. They push me to be the best I can. They encourage me to keep going. They have helped make me the person I am today and I couldn’t thank them enough. They are the best group of people I’ve ever met and I couldn’t be more happy to be apart of it."

⬆️ This is why we LOVE hearing your stories of solos and checkrides. So many people often encouragement to new pilots and make sure they are finding their way through what can be a confusing career path. CONGRATS JERRA on your solo and we hope we will continue to see you piloting the skies over West Virginia.

This week's Wednesday Wonder Woman is NASA astronaut, physicist and STEM educator, Sally Ride.

Sally attended Stanford University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in physics and a Ph.D. in physics. In 1978, Sally Ride was selected as part of NASA's astronaut program, becoming one of the first six women to join. In 1983, she became the first American woman to travel to space aboard the space shuttle Challenger (STS-7), blazing a long-awaited trail for women in the astronaut program. Three years later, she would be a member of the Presidential Commission on the Space Shuttle Challenger Accident, bringing her expertise as an astronaut and physicist to the inquiry to uncover the technical and organizational failures that led to the shuttle's catastrophic failure

In 2001, she founded Sally Ride Science, a company aimed at inspiring and empowering students, particularly girls, to pursue their interests in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Sally Ride Science worked towards closing the gender gap in STEM fields and fostering a love for scientific exploration among young people.

Sally Ride passed away on July 23, 2012, leaving behind a legacy of pioneering achievements, a lasting impact on the scientific community and little girls dreaming of space everywhere.

Congrats to Aurora on her first solo! 👏🛩

Our Go Girl Friday aviatrix jumped through many hoops to obtain her medical after an initial deferment last summer. She kept her dream alive with refresher and proficiency flights while waiting to hear from the FAA. However, Aurora says it made her doubt her career choice at the time, being held up right at the start of her training for what eventually amounted to seven months. But, two weeks after she received her medical, she soloed for the first time in January of 2023 – a few tears of happiness might have been shed.😅 Aurora writes, "The minute I got up in the plane and landed I knew I was doing and pursuing the thing I was meant to do for the rest of my life!"

Aurora's story shows one of the many struggles we go through chasing the aviation dream. She preserved through the all-too-common medical hurdles and is now on her way to a wonderful career. We hope others having the same issue can find some hope in her story. ✈

Geraldine Mock, born on November 22, 1925, in Nemacolin, Pennsylvania, made history as the first woman to fly solo around the world. In 1964, at the age of 38, Mock embarked on a daring journey in her single-engine Cessna 180 named the "Spirit of Columbus." Over the course of nearly a month, she flew approximately 23,000 miles, completing her circumnavigation on April 17, 1964. Willa Brown was a trailblazing figure in aviation history. Born on January 22, 1906, in Glasgow, Kentucky, she became the first African-American woman to earn both a pilot's license and a commercial pilot's license in the United States. Despite facing racial and gender discrimination, Brown pursued her passion for flying and became a prominent advocate for aviation and racial equality.

In addition to her achievements as a pilot, Willa Brown played a significant role in advancing opportunities for African-Americans in aviation. She co-founded the National Airmen's Association of America, an organization dedicated to supporting black pilots. Brown's tireless efforts led to the inclusion of black pilots in the Civilian Pilot Training Program, enabling them to gain the necessary skills and training to become military pilots during World War II. Willa Brown's determination and advocacy paved the way for future generations of black aviators and contributed to the diversification of the aviation industry. Her legacy continues to inspire aspiring pilots, particularly those from underrepresented communities, to pursue their dreams.

Evelyn "Bobbi" Trout was an exceptional female pilot who made significant contributions to aviation during her career.

Born on September 7, 1906, in Greenup, Kentucky, Bobbi became known for her daring flights and record-breaking achievements. In 1928, she set a new endurance record for female pilots by flying continuously for over 12 hours. A year later, she set a new altitude record for women by flying her plane "Golden Eagle" to an altitude of 15,200 feet (4,600 meters).

She and Elinor Smith kept battling for the endurance record, so in November of 1929, they decided to fly together and attempt to beat the endurance record set by two men in July 1929. On November 27, 1930, they were able to refuel three and a half times and set a new endurance record of 42 hours and 3 1/2 minutes. They became the first women pilots to refuel a plane in mid-air.

In 1929 and 1930, she participated in the prestigious Women's Air Derby, also known as the Powder Puff Derby, which was a transcontinental air race for female pilots. Despite facing numerous challenges during the race, including severe weather conditions, Bobbi displayed her resilience and skill as she competed against some of the best aviators of the time. In 1930, she placed in the top ten.

She was one of the founding members of the Ninety-Nines, and worked as a flight instructor, teaching many aspiring pilots. Her dedication to sharing her knowledge and skills helped empower other women to pursue their dreams of becoming pilots.
