Players in the Team:
Team has 6 players on the court.

3 players are front row players and 3 of them are back row players.

Libero has a different color jersey
and is only allowed to play in the
back row.

Team is allowed to use a libero player (back row player, defensive specialist) who wears different color shirt.

Contacts:
Each team is allowed to have maximum of three touches before hitting the ball over the net. (EXCEPTION: block does not count as a touch)

Same player can not hit the ball twice in a row (EXCEPTION I: block doesn’t count a touch.)

Back Row Attack:
Back row players can not attack the ball front row. If they attack, they have to perform the jump behind the attack line (10 feet line, 3 meter line).

IMPORTANT! The ball has to be completely above the net for it to be an illegal attack

Antennas:
It is ALLOWED to play the ball off the net. It is a fault, if the ball contacts net outside antennas.

The ball has to travel between the antennas (or the imagined extensions of them) when flying to the other side of the net.

In or Out?
Referee calls the ball “IN”, if any part of it hits the lines. (Imagine the ball is painted. If the ball left a mark that touches the lines, the ball is judged IN)

Referee calls the ball in if any part
of it hits the lines.

Ball is ruled OUT, if

the ball lands outside the boundary lines (without touching the opponent)

The ball hits the antenna

any of the net or cables outside the antennas

a referee stand or poles or the ceiling (EXPECTION: in high school, club or college volleyball in United States it is allowed to play after ball hits the ceiling)

Contacting the Ball:
Players are NOT allowed to catch, hold or throw the ball.

Players are NOT allowed to hit or block the opponents serve.

Attacking ball which is coming over the net is ILLEGAL, if it has NOT broken the plane of the net.

In other words the player is ALLOWED to swing the ball when it breaks the plane of the net.

Positions

Although your entire team rotates on every play, there are some positions in volleyball that you should know about.

Outside Hitter
This player hits from the strong corner. What do I mean by that? If you're right handed, the strong corner is front-left. Lefties come from the front-right corner to be most powerful.

Middle Blocker
Usually a very tall member of the team. Plays mostly in middle front and blocks every hit. Will usually move to form a double block with either outside hitters.

Setter
Main responsibility is to set up the hitters--wherever they may be (this could even mean back row). The second contact of each possession is meant for the setter, but if he/she can't get it, he/she must yell 'help.' If for some reason the setter must touch the first contact in a possessoin, he/she should cry 'setter out' to let your teammates know that the setter cannot get the second ball.

Libero/Defensive Specialist
These two positions are not one and the same, but the descriptions for each are very similar. Defensive specialists only play in the back row, but if they want to come in the game, they must make a substitution with the referees. Liberos only play back row, but they are allowed to go in and out the game as much as they need. Bookkeepers usually have a tracking sheet for the libero. Liberos must wear a different jersey than the rest of the team to differentiate between them and the rest of the team. They do a lot of rolling and digging to keep the ball in play!

Volleyball is a popular sport that is played professionally, as well as in recreational leagues, on school teams, in backyards, sandlots, or beaches. The game of volleyball can be enjoyed virtually anywhere a net can be set up, including over a swimming pool. A typical volleyball game uses six players on each side. The aim is to deliver the ball over the net and "ground" it (have it touch the ground) on the opposing side while preventing the ball from touching the ground on their side.
Volleyball was developed by William G. Morgan, a physical fitness instructor at the YMCA in Holyoke, Massachusetts. His goal was to invent a game for all ages that was not as physically taxing as basketball. When a basketball itself proved to be too heavy for the sport, Morgan commissioned Spalding to make the first "volleyball" out of calf skin. Eventually, the game moved from recreation only into the professional competitive realm, and is now a featured sporting event in the Olympics. FIVB, the International Volleyball Federation, is the worldwide governing body for Volleyball and Beach Volleyball. USA Volleyball is the United States governing body for volleyball participation in the Olympics.

The regulation volleyball court is a rectangle, 18 meters by 9 meters divided into two equal squares by the center line. Above the center line spans a taut horizontal net that is 2.43 meters above the court. The net is 9.5 meters long, and 1 meter deep. The mesh features squares that are 10 centimeters wide. The volleyball is 65-67 centimeters in circumference and 250-260 grams in weight. The outside is leather, over a bladder of rubber or similar material. It must be of one color and cannot have any laces. Volleyball uniforms consist of a vest or jersey, shorts, kneepads, and rubber or leather shoes without heels. Team members wear the same color and may play in numbered track suits during cold weather.
