British-born Constance Mary Katherine Applebee was a very weak child who noticed that she felt better if she was active, contradicting the widely held belief that women were too frail to exercise. Applebee came to the United States in 1901 at age 29 to take a course at Harvard and it was there that she first showed her American peers the British sport of field hockey. It was such a hit that she started touring womenโs colleges to introduce them to the sport and co-founded the American Field Hockey Association. Applebee served as the athletic director at Bryn Mawr College from 1904 through 1928 and became a naturalized American citizen. She was born in 1873, was an active coach into her 90s, and lived to the age of 107.
