A good challenge that came our way, a bit of head scratching and working with the Herm travel trident team with few early starts and mission accomplished!
New Shoes!
Ask any boat owner what is his most tricky maintenance job and he may reply, checking and antifouling the very bottom of his boat is the most challenging.
Because a “dried out” boat sits on the keel, there are bits you can never reach when she is dried or careened.
With a slightly smaller vessel you can do this on a beach or even with a crane as she is placed back in the water.
For a 74 ton steel catamaran ferry it is much trickier. This design makes her a stable and sea kindly transport but it is quite tricky to get to the points of contact when she sits on the drying berth.
The most effective answer is to use the assistance of the tide which is quite considerable in our waters giving a rise and fall of many metres.
Trident carries out meticulous service and inspections of both their ferries every winter and this is going on now as you may have seen at St Sampsons harbour.
To overcome the tricky problem outlined, fixed steel tressels have been constructed and positioned under the twin hulls and placed carefully in position to allow access to undereath the hulls when the sea recedes to allow inspection, repair and painting as required. The shafts can now be inspected and withdrawn too. The quality of the build is shown to be incredibly good and will serve the company for many years. The MCA will now be able to view the bottom of the vessel.
The tressels will be stowed carefully away between seasons promising many years of faithful and reliable service.
Well done to Dan and his team from HAMON FABRICATIONS together with the staff of Trident for this achievement.
