We were saddened to learn of the loss of distinguished and versatile actor, on both stage and screen, James Earl Jones.

Upon hearing the news, we reflected on the times he graced us with his talent and warmth. His first appearance on our stage was in 1972 and he appeared six more times throughout the years.

In honor of his life, please take a moment to experience the 1988 archival audio of James Earl Jones reading an excerpt of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail”. His performance was in honor of the Martin Luther King Day Celebration live at The 92nd Street Y, New York.

May his memory be a blessing.

Join renowned presidential historian Dr. Lindsay Chervinsky with The Atlantic’s Tom Nichols on John Adams and the seeds of the modern presidency — and Chervinsky’s new book, Making the Presidency.

Intense partisan divides. Debates over citizenship. Fears of political violence and potential foreign conflict. When John Adams became president in 1797, the country faced many of the same challenges it faces today. And in Chervinsky’s authoritative and absorbing new book, she offers a fascinating portrait of how Adams helped shape the presidency — and the American republic — into what it is today. Hear her and Nichols discuss what we can learn from Adams, a fascinating and complex figure — his legislative acumen, his political mistakes, his faith in the peaceful transfer of power — and what it teaches us about who we are as a nation today.

This program is part of the Newmark Civic Life Series, known for conversations with leading experts exploring pro-democracy efforts at this critical moment in the US and around the world, supported by Craig Newmark Philanthropies.
