Breast Cancer Social Network
Previous work has shown that cancer patients have a good support network, but the improvement in breast cancer - specific mortality - has not been studied. In 2016, Candyce Kroenke and her colleagues at Kaiser Permanente and other institutions published research in the journal Cancer that examined the impact of social networking on breast cancer survival rates. The 9,267 women in this study had previously been diagnosed with breast or ovarian cancer, a type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and were part of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) breast cancer screening and control program. Sources: 5

Using the Berkman-Syme Social Network Index, the researchers measured the women's social networks two years after their diagnosis. The study suggests that the lack of a large social network is associated with worse outcomes, though more work needs to be done to understand why. Finally, the study authors acknowledge that age, gender, race, ethnicity, education level, and other factors may be factors in determining social network size. Sources: 5

Women with breast cancer need to reach out to their family, friends and colleagues - when they need support and support. Families and caregivers also need help navigating their patients "complex social networks and finding support groups to better understand and help breast cancer patients. Sources: 5, 6

To mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we invite you to join HealthworksCollective in our growing role in educating breast cancer patients and connecting them to the treatment and resources they need. Thousands of websites and social media channels now provide quick information to women who want to find out about breast cancer. How can women and their families be sure that what they read on the Internet - and in their own homes - is fact, not fiction? Sources: 6

Embedded within the framework of interpersonal relationships, this intervention study provides a unique opportunity to investigate how social networks influence breast cancer screening behavior in underserved populations by examining the impact of social media on breast cancer screening behavior in the US. Vietnamese - American women, however, are less frequently examined than their white counterparts. This dissertation examines the impact of community breast cancer-based screening intervention studies on women 40 and older in Santa Clara County, California, and their interactions with family members and friends. Sources: 2

Over the last 20 years, great progress has been made in investigating the behavior of breast cancer screening in underserved populations, and we find a strong link between social media and screening behavior in these populations and their health outcomes. Sources: 2, 6

Indeed, the number of breast cancer survivors is steadily increasing, reaching more than 1.5 million women in the US alone and more than 2 million worldwide. Sources: 6

New targeted therapies are being tested and used for all types of breast cancer, giving many women hope for a longer life. Every year, more than 200,000 women are diagnosed and nearly 40,000 die, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Please join us and stand by us as we raise awareness of this disease and fight back against this devastating disease. Sources: 1, 6

Previous literature has shown that the network of social relationships surrounding an individual plays an important role in pre-BC survival. The degree of connection with society, family and friends has an important influence on the prognosis of breast cancer (BC) and the survival rate. However, the mechanisms by which social networks influence predictions are unknown. Sources: 1, 4

Many studies have shown that people with larger social networks have better health and lower mortality. This study examines how social networks can influence breast cancer outcomes and the role of social connections in the prognosis of BC. Sources: 4

Women's social networks were assessed in the following components: social networks, health status and breast cancer prognosis. The information used to calculate the "social networking index" included first-degree relatives living in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Japan, and the Netherlands. This was followed by the follow-up study of women in their 20s, 30s and 40s. Sources: 3, 4

Among older white women, higher breast cancer mortality was associated with a lower social network index and lower health status than younger women. Compared to women who had larger social networks, women in their 20s, 30s and 40s who were socially isolated had a higher rate of breast cancer and a higher prognosis. In non-white women, a lack of relative friendships was associated with a high mortality rate from breast cancer. Sources: 3

In the study, which the researchers say is the largest to date, 9,267 women who were diagnosed with breast cancer at any stage were asked about their personal relationships within two years of diagnosis. Women who had a lower social network index than women in their 20s, 30s, and 40s were twice as likely to have breast cancer come back and recur, and three times as likely to die from breast cancer than women who were socially isolated. Dr. Jennifer L. Dolan, an associate professor in the Department of Public Health at the University of California, San Diego, led the authors of the study and was a co-author of the paper. Sources: 0
