As Veterans Day weekend draws to a close, we'd like to showcase some of the great things our Student Veterans of America chapter has done over the past few weeks. It's amazing what can be accomplished when you surround yourself with some amazing individuals dedicated to making a difference in their communities. Individual posts for each of these events will take place later in the week.
October 20th: We hosted a Regional Event for Student Veterans from across New England with a special guest speaker, Navy Seal and Owner of Battle Grounds Coffee Company: Sal DeFranco. This was like a mini-reunion of sorts from the Leadership Institute down in Washington D.C. We had Student Veterans travel from all the way up at UMaine up in Bangor, and from as far South as Bryant University in Rhode Island. Bryant Veterans Professional Network Student Veterans Organization at Northeastern University
November 2nd: We had our Flag Day Ceremony where a large flag was unveiled in the lobby of our flagship building, University Crossing, to honor our veterans of past and present. Janine Wert, Director of Veterans Services, welcomed our honorees and all in attendance. She was followed up by the President of our River Hawk Veterans Organization, Joe Fortini, and then our Chancellor, Jacqueline Moloney, addressed the crowd. We then heard from our Hall of Fame inductees that we honored the following night at our Legacy Ball. UMass Lowell
November 3rd: We had our 8th Annual Legacy Ball and Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. This is a formal event held in the Grand Ballroom of UMass Lowell’s Inn and Conference Center. We started with a cocktail hour, followed by a formal dinner, some speeches, and then closed out the night with some dancing. This year we inducted four incredible individuals: Marty Martinez, Special Agent-in-Charge (SAC) of the Coast Guard Investigative Service, Michael Hubbard, a Special Forces Communications Sergeant, Henry de Lima, retired U.S. Army Sergeant and current Social Worker in Lawrence, MA, and finally SGM (ret.) Rojas, who worked tirelessly to ensure our students received the educational benefits they deserve.
November 4th: We were invited to the Salute to Service Patriots game, presented by Raytheon. The night began at the Patriots Hall of Fame where there was an open bar, free food ranging from burgers to lobster tails and everything in between, and Patriots Cheerleaders. We were lucky enough to hear from Robert Kraft, Chairman and CEO of the Patriots, Dr. Tom Kennedy, Chairman and CEO of Raytheon, and Jared Lyon, President and CEO of Student Veterans of America, during the reception as well. Following the reception, the Veterans were invited on the field during the opening ceremonies, and for the playing of the National Anthem, it was an indescribable experience, and we can’t thank Raytheon, New England Patriots, and SVA enough.
November 7th: The Office of Multicultural Affairs held an Invisible Identities panel where five Student Veterans at UMass Lowell spoke to share their experiences from their service and academic life. This was a great opportunity to show the University and its faculty/students who Student Veterans are and get away from the stereotypes.
November 9th: Morning: This was a busy day, in the morning we were invited to Battle Grounds Coffee by Dana and Sal DeFranco for the Merrimack Valley Chamber of Commerce Veterans networking breakfast. The radio station 97.9 WHAV broadcasted the whole event, and it was a great way to tell the community who we are, what we do, and opportunities available within our organization and on campus. Other speakers included representatives from the Mayor’s office, Raytheon, UPS, the VFW, and more.
November 9th: Evening: In the evening we hosted our Military Appreciation Night at the Tsongas Center! UMass Lowell’s Hockey team faced off against the University of New Hampshire. Five of our Student Veterans were on the ice for the puck drop along with our Hall of Fame inductee from the previous week, Henry de Lima. Not only did we fundraise and raise awareness for our Student Veterans and organization, but we had representation from 50 veterans both past and present. RiverHawks Hockey
Last, but not least, we have been working with LinkedIn and SVA to establish our very own Career Development Officer within our organization. Stay tuned, because you don’t want to miss what’s next!!!
Happy 243rd! 🦅🌎⚓️

This weekend we had the distinct honor and privilege to represent our Student Veterans of America chapter here at UMass Lowell helping The Mission Continues to serve the people affected by the gas explosions in Lawrence, MA. After handing out donations in Colonial Heights, we then assisted at three more locations. We first stopped at the House Of Mercy, Lawrence, MA, an organization that helps those in need by providing shelter, food, clothing, showers, and counseling services where we sorted through donations of clothing. Our second stop was with Healthy Families, an organization that helps mothers under the age of 21 with basic needs and counseling services where we dropped off donations of diapers and formula. Our last stop was at The Psychological Center - Daybreak Shelter, Pegasus House, Women's View an organization that helps those in recovery living on the streets, where we dropped off cases of water, food, and toiletries. We are incredibly honored to continue our service within the community and build a connection with so many people and organizations that make a positive impact.
