The Academy SA

The Academy is 1 year dance programme that is founded and created by choreographer, Hope Maimane.

“For the past 4 years, I have travelled, danced & taught workshops in 25 Countries across 4 continents. In each of these countries I soaked up as much knowledge as one possibly could. I dedicated myself to learning what works in each place and how each country and culture teaches dance in different methods. I am proud to say that this programme, The Academy, is the collaboration of the best attributes from studios across the globe, mixed together to create one hub of knowledge. The Academy is truly going to change a lot of lives, 24 lives to be exact, as only 24 dancers will be selected. The reason why I am only selecting 24 is because at any given moment, dancers should always have enough space to feel isolated in their movement while they are in training (a lesson learnt in Singapore.) The intensive part of the training is intensive because (when in training,) dancers should always have a strong push and learn to push their limits. If they consistently learn at a slow pace then they will never adopt the skills needed to catch choreography quickly and also their stamina will forever be questionable (a lesson learnt in Poland.)

Each dancer from The Academy will have their Growth Monitored. They need to know that there is always someone watching to see if they are working as hard as they should in each respective class (a lesson learnt in Hong Kong.) Furthermore to the “Monitored Growth,” we will be monitoring which style each dancer needs to work on more. While Modern & Jazz are our primary focus, we will not take the other dance styles lightly. Those that struggle with Hip Hop or Musical Theatre or Jazz Funk will be brought to the front of the class so they can learn from the front & those that struggle with Modern & Jazz & Technique Class will brought to the front of the class so they can learn from the front. You cannot learn from the back if you are struggling, you never learn that way, you will merely produce a dull version of the choreography. The only way to get better is to dive into every style from the front or second row (A lesson learnt France.)

For now, I have not set an age limit for the potential applicants wishing to audition for this programme. Once that age limit comes out though, The Academy will be open to all ages that fall into that gap. There will be no separation of Junior and Senior section. It will one group of 24 Dancers across all ages and they will be treated as equal professional dancers. This is why...Competition (when done correctly) is a great motivator to uplift one’s work ethic. As a Junior, If I see a Senior-Dancer jumping amazingly in the weekly Jumping Classes, it will push me to reach that level. As a Senior, if I see a Junior-Dancer turning amazingly, it will push me to reach that level in the weekly Turn Classes offered at The Academy. As a result, this eliminates the possibility of have a singular person as “the best in room.” Some will be good at this and some will be good at that. In that way, everyone feels like they have to push at everything. Some dancers will excel at Technique but their Precision and Musicality will need work. Other dancer will excel at Strength to hold their leg in a perfect tilt, yet they will need to learn how to convincingly tell a powerful story through dance. There is always something to work on (A lesson learnt in South Africa.) These are just a few aspects we will focus on. Unfortunately I cannot explain everything on here.

I am incredibly excited about The Academy SA. 2019 is going to a year of incredible growth for these 24 selected dancers. I encourage everyone who feels like they want to reach a new level of dance to consider auditioning. If you have seen any of my work/choreography then you will know that I care more about the heart and soul than I do about technique and posture. We can teach you everything you need to learn at The Academy but we cannot make you Want It! That is all on you or your child if you are a parent reading this. “Wanting it” has nothing to do with how good or how bad you are right now but it has EVERYTHING to do with how good or bad you will be in the future. To be amazing, you must WANT to be amazing!

There is sometimes this notion of “some people are just born with it” or “they just have that thing you can't teach” - To those who have that mentality...Come watch the show at the end of the year, we will see if you still share the same opinion. It is not a matter of what you are teaching but a question of HOW you teach it. No two souls operate on the same frequency. What you say to one person might not work for another. In this moment, it is not time for teachers to become angry, but to find an alternative method to receive the same result (This is a lesson I learnt from teaching in multiple countries, sometimes to people who do not understand my language.)

That is why I am also especially excited to have Adrianna Patłaszyńska as our ‘technician’ for the The Academy SA. She really is a phenomenal teacher. Adrianna knows how to explain and demonstrate one lesson in multiple different ways so that it makes sense to the entire class. No one is ever left behind in her classes. She has a great eye for technique in dance. If you go through the videos on this page then you will also see that she has a fantastic interpretation of the Modern Dance style as well. Each dancer will learn a great deal from her. The Pure Technique classes will really bring out the best in all 24 selected dancers. The Turn Classes will help everyone with their pirouettes & fouettés & turns; the Leap Classes will help everyone with new jumps, ex*****on of jumps and together with Hope Maimane’s New Tricks classes, we will help The Academy SA dancers learn how to use all of this within the choreography so that it enhances their performances.

Please do not think of The Academy as a “New Studio.” We are so far away from that, there is zero ownership from our side. You belong to yourself. What you choose to do outside of “Academy Hours” is completely and utterly your choice. In fact, those who know me well know that I am a huge advocate of learning from different people as I believe that produces the strongest & most versatile artists.
