Riley Everson was diagnosed with Colon Cancer at 24 years old and 17 weeks pregnant. She had to undergo treatment and remove her entire colon all while she was pregnant and a new mother. It was a struggle she never expected at such a young age or even when she was expecting her first child but nearly 10 years later, her and her baby are living their best life!

"Getting an ostomy completely changed my life but I didn’t let it completely change me. A lot of people don’t understand why I’m so positive and happy most of the time. It is because I have been through a lot in my short 30 years of life and I don’t want to let the bad things outweigh the good things. I want to be able to share with people that just because I have something like an ostomy doesn’t mean I can’t do the things I love. Being a bright light in a horrible disease is a blessing for me." https://www.ostomy.org/victors-ostomy-story/

Colorectal cancer was the 4th leading cause of cancer death in both men and women under 50 in the late 1990s but is now 1st in men and 2nd in women, according to new data released by the American Cancer Society this morning.

Our mission is clear: change the future and save lives. But we can’t do it without you. Stand with us. Be relentless in the fight against colorectal cancer.

Big News! UOAA Virtual Ostomy Clinic provided by The Wound Company has launched to bring certified ostomy nurses to ostomates and their caregivers across the United States virtually. UOAA recognizes that in the healthcare system today, too many ostomates do not have the regular access to a certified ostomy nurse they need for a successful health journey. Now for a one-time direct payment of $125, The Wound Company’s certified ostomy nurses will provide people with personalized support via Zoom, text and email for 30 days in the privacy of their own home. Caring for an Ostomate with Memory Loss. “My mother has had a colostomy for nearly 60 years. She is now 99 years old with dementia, but had been independently keeping up with her stoma and pouch until just a few years ago. When family members started taking on the task of assisting her, we had to scramble to get up-to-speed since we never paid attention to the details of changing her “appliance” or emptying and re-closing the pouch.”

This blog by Convatec Ostomy Care shares some suggested tips and tricks that may help as you care for and support your loved one.
