I feel like it’s time for another life update.

A close family member has been in and out of the hospital for the past month, and has recently received a cancer diagnosis. I’ve been staying at this family member’s house frequently, taking her to appointments, going back and forth to the hospital, etc. (Anyone who has assisted a family member through illness knows what this entails.) And the thing is, I think that we’re just getting started; she hasn’t begun cancer treatment yet, hasn’t even had the scan to tell us whether or not the cancer is elsewhere in her body, what stage we’re looking at, etc. We’re at the very beginning of what might be a very long road.

I know that she’s going to continue to need me, and I want to be someone she can rely on.

But… what this is doing to my creativity is tremendous. I’m mentally and emotionally drained. It’s very difficult to write romance (or write anything at all) when you’re going through something like this. I find myself really struggling to get into the mindset. Currently I have a book set to release on September 17th, a month later than originally scheduled because I delayed it when she was hospitalized the first time, and I’m just really having a hard time getting it finished. The brain energy required to create is… seriously lacking.

I just don’t have the bandwidth, you know?

So, for now, I’m taking BETTING ON THE CHEF off preorder sale.

What this means for my books going forward is that I will not be able to create any new preorders for an entire year. Anything that is already up for preorder will remain—unless I become too overwhelmed with life stuff and personal responsibilities to create, in which case I will assess each forthcoming title individually to see where I stand.

For now, for the handful of you waiting to read Dawson and Sophie’s happy ever after in BETTING ON THE CHEF, I will alert you via newsletter and social media when that book is released.

I’m sorry I’ve let you down. Authors are not machines, and I’m learning that the hard way right now. I appreciate your understanding and patience.

💋 QOTD: What book is this from?

Well, I thought Devourer of Men would be my top read this month, but those Dukes of Forsyth University really gave it their all! And I think, mostly because of my absolute devotion to Re*****on Maddox, Dukes of Madness takes the first place for July!

If you weren't expecting elements of suspense from me, you probably weren't alone. But then again, I've always just gone where the characters lead anyway, so it really isn't all that surprising.

Just a friendly reminder that we actually do *need* your reviews. For multiple reasons, but let's focus on these key points:

1) That Pesky Algorithm - Some retailers (one big one in particular that starts with A) will give books with more reviews more exposure. The algorithm loves reviews.

2) Credibility - How many times have you felt hesitant to purchase a product or service because there weren't any reviews? This absolutely applies to books! When readers are looking for something new to read, your review could mean the difference between a sale or a skip.

3) Discoverability - In other words, reviews help us with visibility and exposure! When you leave reviews, other readers see them. Especially on sites like GoodReads and BookBub! When you also share your reviews on social media, even more people see them! This is a wonderful gift that costs nothing but means the world to us, as advertising can be quite expensive. Additionally, even just adding the books to your TBR on GoodReads can put them in front of other readers that may not have seen them otherwise.

And one more, a bonus *personal* reason: In all honesty, when I don't see a lot of sales or reviews for my books, I get discouraged and wonder why I'm even bothering to continue a series. (Y'all know my negative self talk can be brutal at times.) But in all honesty, negative voices aside, most of us creatives have severe "idea-ADHD", meaning we have so many damn ideas that we can't keep up--with shiny new ones popping up all the freaking time. 😅 Keeping ourselves focused on finishing a series can be hard; doing so with a series that people aren't actually reading? Damn near impossible.

TL;DR: If you enjoyed a book, please leave a review. If you care about an author and want them to continue writing, leave a review.

But, Jessa, I don't even know *how*!

It doesn't have to be much. It doesn't have to be perfect. And it certainly doesn't have to be a Shakespearean sonnet. Just... drop a couple sentences about the book--ie: the premise and what you liked and/or disliked--star that review, and go about your business. You favorite authors will really appreciate the time you took to do so.
