"On August 23, the billionaire chairman of Fox News, Lachlan Murdoch, sued Crikey over an article published in June that covered the role of Fox News in the Jan 6 insurrection in Washington DC. That article did not name Lachlan Murdoch (rather, one paragraph referred to “the Murdochs”); the headline mentioned the word “Murdoch”.
Based on those two references, published on a small independent news website in Australia, Lachlan Murdoch has unleashed his legal and financial forces against us.
We are determined to fight for freedom of speech and a free press — for our right as journalists to cover and analyse matters of public importance. What we published was tame compared to hundreds of articles and commentaries about the role of Fox News and the Murdochs in the US (where, as public figures, they can't sue for defamation). But here in Australia, if we lose the case in court, the cost to Crikey could be millions in damages and legal costs.
People have been asking how they can support our legal defence.
The single best way to support our case is to become a subscriber. This gives us room to use your contribution to defend our case both in the court of law and in public, and to continue to hold all forms of power to account. Subscribe here .
However, if you would like to contribute exclusively to our legal fees, please contribute to this gofundme. If you would like updates on our case and how we are progressing, please visit here.
All the money raised from this crowdfunding initiative will be used for legal costs to defend the defamation action that has been commenced by Lachlan Murdoch, as well as any costs or damages we are ordered to pay by the court.
If the court makes a costs order in our favour, this could mean that we end up raising more money than we need to pay our legal costs. If this happens, we will make a donation of any surplus funds to the Alliance for Journalists’ Freedom . Surplus funds will include any amount recovered through a costs order, as well as any funds raised that exceed the total amount charged by our lawyers.
Thanks for your support!
NOTE: An unrelated party set up a scam donation page mimicking Crikey. This gofundme is the only legitimate crowdsourcing option. You can double check by the creation date as our fund launched on Friday, August 26."

EDIT: WOAH! You beautiful mofos. You didn't just smash that 50k target. You smashed Matt's fundraiser past 60k! Overnight! I am in awe of our community here. On behalf of Matt and his little family - thank you so much to everyone who chipped in. This will have a huge positive impact on this family during whatever time they have left together. Thank you also to those who couldn't chip in but expressed support or provided advice. And I also want to acknowledge all the heartbreaking stories of loss of loved ones to cancer, as well as the inspiring stories of survival that some of you have shared here. G💛🙏
-------
It's really hard to write about this because life is so f*cking unfair sometimes and the realisation of how precious it is can be crushing. But here goes.
When you think of "The Juice Media" you probably think of Lucy, Ellen, Zoë and me. But there's a few more people behind the scenes who make the Juice Media possible, and one of those is Matt Nelson - our accountant, who's been helping me manage the business side of things for the past 4 years. Matt's not just a top accountant, he's also a top human and a loving father and husband.
Tragically, a couple of months ago, Matt was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. He is only 37. His son Teddy is about to turn 2, and his second unborn child is due in September.
I mean, it's hard to get any more tragic than this. As a father of two young children myself, this is my worst nightmare and I've been bawling my eyes out at the thought of this situation. (Luca had just turned 2 and Juno had only just been born in this photo we took with Matt in late 2019)
Matt is now fighting for his life. He is fighting with every inch of his body to stay around to see his baby born in September. To support his partner, Emily. And he is fighting to be here long enough for Teddy to form memories of his daddy.
But while Matt focuses on the fight of his life, he isn't able to work - and neither of course is Emily. Which is why Matt's friends and family have set up a GoFundMe to help them cover rent and day-to-day expenses, and not have to stress about money, at a time when the cost of living has gone up, on top of everything else.
Matt's friends and family have already raised over $40k. The Juice Media contributed $5,000 to that amount. They are within sight of the $50,000 target they set. But they need a little more help.
So I am turning to you - the community of the Juice Media - to ask for your help for the final stretch. If you love the Juice Media, it's in no small part thanks to the generous work of Matt Nelson. So please, if you can comfortably afford to, help us in giving something back to this generous, kind, funny soul who has given so much of himself to making this project what it is.
Can you help us smash that $50,000 target?
👉 gofundme.com/f/support-matt-nelson-during-his-cancer-treatment
Every contribution counts. But please, only chip in if you can afford to, we don't expect people chipping in who aren't in a financial position to do so comfortably!
Thank you. (And remember to appreciate your loved ones - we just never know how long we have them for)
💛🙏 Giordano
By now you’ve no doubt heard the news that the UK has approved WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange’s extradition to the US to face espionage and hacking charges.
And if you’re anything like me, you’re absolutely sickened by what that means: for Julian, for his family, and for press freedom around the world.
Julian is not a criminal. In his work at WikiLeaks, Julian exposed heinous war crimes perpetrated by the United States. He received information from sources and he published that information online. No matter which way you slice it, these actions amount to journalism. This exact thing happens every single day in newsrooms all around the world.
While much can be said about how free our media actually is (hello, Murdoch monopoly), the fact remains that the prosecution of these charges against Julian will have catastrophic consequences on freedom of expression and freedom of the press. It will set a dangerous precedent for journalists around the world – already an incredibly dangerous job in many countries – who will suddenly be vulnerable to prosecution simply for reporting the facts.
That is exactly what is now in train. It is up to all of us to ensure that does not happen.
In Australia, there’s a groundswell of support for Julian and for his release. My friend and colleague Senator Janet Rice has been tireless in her advocacy for Julian, as has my colleague Senator Peter Whish-Wilson through his work in the Bring Julian Assange Home Parliamentary Group. So many more people have worked behind the scenes to help bring him home. So many more people are needed.
In 2021, then-opposition leader Anthony Albanese called for Julian’s urgent release from jail. He said enough is enough, and that he “can't see what is served by keeping him incarcerated”. I couldn’t agree more. The Australian Greens couldn’t agree more.
But now, as prime minister, Albanese has fallen silent. He holds the highest office in the country, and he has the singular power to put pressure on the US government to drop these farcical charges.
Instead, his government’s official response is that they have “noted” the extradition order. While they have also said they would like to see the case “brought to a close”, that reads as indifference as to *how* it actually comes to an end.
Prime Minister, that is not good enough. The community has expressed in no uncertain terms that we want you to act quickly and decisively to end this injustice and bring Julian home. In the absence of any action approximating this, we can only conclude you are choosing to speak out on this issue only when it is politically expedient.
Julian cannot be left to die in prison. That is unfortunately a very possible outcome if the extradition to the US goes ahead. Julian will likely be held in solitary confinement – a death sentence for a man experiencing depression and at risk of su***de. And this will all be happening in a country that literally plotted an assassination attempt against him; a country that is exacting clumsy revenge against him for embarrassing them and exposing them for the war criminals they are.
The Australian Government must intervene – NOW. No more deferring to “due process”, no more “noting” of developments. The Prime Minister must pick up the phone to Washington and tell President Joe Biden in no uncertain terms that the US must end this abuse of power and drop the charges against Julian. For him, for his family, and for all of us.
Because as WikiLeaks wrote in their statement responding to the extradition news yesterday, Julian’s freedom is coupled to all our freedoms. The Greens will always support journalists’ right to speak truth to power, and we will continue the fight to bring Julian home.

Journalism is going to have to save itself — because the way it's going, frankly it's done for Dear media colleagues, please stop fiddling while democracy burns. Otherwise, our profession is doomed — and will deserve to be.
The rising cost of living affects us all but our government isn't doing anything to help. Instead of ensuring Australia gets a pay rise, the Government is content to see us get a pay cut of around $2000 in real terms. https://www.afr.com/policy/economy/australia-s-cost-of-living-crisis-in-12-charts-20220501-p5ahks
Franz Dowling and Kyle Magee were in Bowen court today for their amazing action in December when they shovelled tonnes of coal out of Adani's coal train and stopped its journey for over 24 hours. Franz received a $1200 fine, while Kyle got a $1000 fine and a three month prison sentence suspended for twelve months. Both were ordered to pay $500 compensation.
Kyle is the fifth climate activist to be given a prison sentence in the last six months in Australia. It will be to this country's ongoing shame that the people who make millions of dollars out of polluting our planet are given government subsidies to do so, while those who tried to stop it were locked up. But this is the state of affairs that means we have no other option than to continue resisting the immoral fossil fuel industry and its government backers.
Kyle and Franz are two ordinary people who decided to do what they could to disrupt this destructive industry, we need plenty more like them if we are to have any chance of avoiding catastrophic climate change.
"If you think climate action has been absent from the election campaign so far, you’re right. New data from Isentia shows how the most important issue facing Australia is being ignored by the major parties and the media, just weeks after large areas of northern NSW suffered repeated record floods.
In the weeks since the election began, climate change has been, respectively, the 7th, 6th and 5th most commonly mentioned topic in coverage — and climate received little mention in the debate this week (beyond Anthony Albanese’s focus on “clean energy”) or afterwards.
That suits both sides: "
Climate is being ignored, especially by the ABC — and the loudest voice is of denialists Data from Isentia shows that climate change has so far been missing in action in the coverage of most media outlets throughout the election campaign.

Even Liberals agree, the government’s flood response has been appalling.
"The federal government has asked a multinational fertiliser company to stop work on plans to remove Indigenous rock art from a world heritage-nominated area in the Burrup Peninsula after traditional owners raised concerns.
Perdaman is planning to build a $4.5bn fertiliser plant in Western Australia’s Burrup Peninsula. The company is already contracted to buy gas used to make the fertiliser from Woodside Energy’s Scarborough gas field.
The plant has been strongly supported by both the Western Australian and federal governments, with $255m given to the company to build water and marine infrastructure nearby.
Building the plant would, however, require the removal of rock art at three sites.
The company has been given approval by the Western Australian government to go ahead with the removal but it is understood it does not yet have the work approvals required to start.
The Burrup Peninsula in the Pilbara – known as Murujuga to traditional custodians – is also an outdoor gallery home to over a million examples of Indigenous rock art produced over a period of 50,000 years."

Add your details and make sure to ask the EPA to assess the plan at the highest level by ticking ‘Public Environmental Review’ at 5.
When they ask what your reasons are at 6, you can leave it blank, or mention risk of underground and surface water contamination, air pollution, native vegetation clearing and carbon emissions. You can also say you don’t want fracking to happen at all in The Kimberley, and briefly talk about why the Kimberley is special to you if you have time.
24,000. That’s the number of fracking wells in a North American gasfield that fossil fuel company, Theia Energy, compares with the Kimberley.
A new proposal from Theia for exploratory drilling and fracking in the Kimberley has just been submitted to the EPA for assessment.
We’ve got just days to have our say.
