Wow! Great info Scott!
Did you know that research suggests that deterioration of olfaction (sense of smell) precedes a decline in cognitive abilities? Indeed, olfactory loss is associated with significant losses of brain matter (gray and white) in humans. Loss of olfaction can even predict the progression of mild cognitive impairment to Alzheimer's disease.
Knowing the correlation between olfaction and cognition, researchers set out to investigate whether olfactory enrichment (exposure to fragrances) can improve memory in older adults (aged 60-85). Participants in the study were provided a diffuser and seven essential oils as fragrances (rose, orange, eucalyptus, lemon, peppermint, rosemary, and lavender). They diffused each oil in a rotation--changing the oil they diffused daily--for two hours as they slept. This process was continued for six months.

The researchers found that fragrances have privileged access to areas of the brain and pathways relevant to olfaction and memory, which may help normalize brain circuitry linked to memory. Remarkably, nightly diffusion improved cognition, memory, and neural functioning by 226%!
Bones are living tissue that undergo remodeling (mature bone tissue is removed from the skeleton and replaced with new bone tissue) throughout life. Whether we have strong or brittle bones depends on the efficiency of bone remodeling and several factors that regulate it.
A preclinical study found that isolated 1,8-cineole (the primary constituent in eucalyptus EO, rosemary CT 1,8-cineole, cardamom, and myrtle CT 1,8-cineole) improves bone strength by increasing osteoblast differentiation, upregulating osteogenic gene expression, regenerating bones, and decreasing bone loss. All of these are involved in the bone remodeling process, suggesting that 1,8-cineole has promise for bone health and strength.

Sometimes essential oils show greater activity than drugs in research, which is great because they tend to have better safety profiles as well. A recent laboratory study found that fennel essential oil demonstrated higher antibacterial activity than ampicillin against three of four bacteria tested (S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, B. subtilis). Additionally, its antioxidant capacity exceeded synthetic BHT and vitamin C.

Collagen is the main structural protein in the skin and a basic building block of tissues (connective, tendons, bones, muscles, and cartilage). There are currently 28 types of collagen identified in the human body, each of which serves a specific function. Collagen is constantly being repaired and regenerated to heal and strengthen tissues and make them resilient to stretching.
Evaluation of the biological activities of four lavender essential oil varieties (L. angustifolia 'Xinxun-1'-'Xinxun-4') on human skin cells in a laboratory setting showed that each variety possesses significant antioxidant activity and increased collagen regeneration activity. Xinxum2 displayed the highest ferrous ion chelating activity and reducing power, and the greatest collagen regeneration activity. This research suggests that lavender essential oil may be supportive of collagen regeneration and thus the repair and maintenance of the tissues it is found in.

Neuropathic pain is one of the most challenging pains to manage clinically and few viable options exist in Western medicine. A recent comprehensive review of clinically proven natural solutions for neuropathic pain highlighted the benefits of essential oils like lavender, rose, and ginger essential oil, and blends containing lavender, clary sage, rose, ginger, geranium essential oil for neuropathic pain.

In my experience, blends tend to be most effective and other oils I have found effective include peppermint, fir oils, frankincense, vetiver, wintergreen, camphor, helichrysum, copaiba, and spruce. For long-term use, dilute the blend to 10%-15%. The blend can be diluted to 25%-50% for short-term use.

This research comes as no surprise to those of us with experience using helichrysum (affectionately called "liquid stiches") for the skin. Corsican helichrysum essential oil and isolated neryl acetate modulated genes involved in epidermal differentiation (a process to maintain healthy cells in the outermost layer of the skin), skin barrier formation (protects the body from the external environment), and lipid and ceramide synthesis (crucial for skin structure and function and to maintain youthful-looking skin) in a skin explant model. Results were observed in 24 hours but improved even more after five days.

Candida albicans is a yeast (a type of fungus) that normally lives in the body (mouth, skin, gut). Normally, healthy bacteria in your microbiomes control C. albicans so it doesn't cause illness. However, when it is overgrown it causes a condition called candidiasis.
Of four essential oils tested (oregano CT carvacrol, thyme para-cymene CT, peppermint, and sage CT 1,8-cineole), oregano showed the highest antifungal activity against C. albicans and suppressed its virulence factors in laboratory research. Oregano oil also reduced biofilm formation and degraded an existing biofilm. This suggests that oregano essential oil may be useful during periods of C. albicans overgrowth.

Cinnamon bark essential oil is commonly used in blends to support healthy immune function. A recent laboratory study found that cinnamon bark oil and its primary constituent (trans-cinnamaldehyde) inhibit cellular factors that allow viruses entry into and the ability to escape from cells.

A preclinical model evaluated the effects of bergamot essential oil in comparison to fluoxetine for depression caused by chronic unpredictable mild stress (C**S). Four groups were included: 1) control group (no stress or intervention), 2) group experiencing C**S with no intervention, 3) C**S with inhalation of 2.5% bergamot essential oil via nebulizer for one hour daily for five weeks, and 4) C**S with intraperitoneal injection of fluoxetine daily for five weeks. Inhaling bergamot significantly improved depressive-like behavior and positively altered brain health. Altogether, the research suggests that inhaling bergamot essential oil protected brain plasticity to help relieve depression.

Young Living has Hinoki oil. Good information. Thank you Scott A. Johnson!
Inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) is a key regulator of immune activation and inflammation. Expression of iNOS occurs in inflammatory conditions, triggering the production of large amounts of nitric oxide. Overexpressed or dysregulated iNOS is a factor in many conditions, including neurodegeneration, atherosclerosis, and various types of pain. Hinoki leaf essential oil, and one of its primary constituents (sabinene), suppressed the expression of iNOS, reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, IL-27, IL-1ra). This suggests that hinoki leaf essential oil is a promising solution to support a healthy inflammatory response during inflammatory conditions that involve dysregulated iNOS.

Neuroinflammation plays a prominent role in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Microglia are macrophages in the central nervous system that activate in response to brain injury and disease and are the primary cells involved in neuroinflammation. Altering microglia activation is a promising strategy for AD. A computer-simulated analysis of the constituents in jasmine (J. grandiflorum) essential oil revealed that alpha-Hexylcinnamaldehyde, nerolidol, hexahydrofarnesyl acetone, dodecanal, and decanal are key constituents that target pathways involved in neuroinflammation and microglial activation. The research suggests that jasmine essential oil may inhibit the overactivation of microglia and decrease both neuroinflammation and oxidative stress through multiple pathways to combat AD.
