Chelsea Make Last Four With Win Over Derby

Chelsea beat 10-man Derby to take a 3-1 win at the iPro Stadium and advance to the last four of the Capital One Cup.

Eden Hazard profited from a mistake by Rams captain Richard Keogh to coolly slot the visitors in front half-way through a first half dominated by Jose Mourinho's men, before Filipe Luis doubled the lead with a stunning free kick.

Craig Bryson pulled one back with a fine finish 20 minutes from time, before the hosts were reduced to 10 men as last man Jake Buxton was sent off for a foul on Loic Remy, and Andre Schurrle made them pay as he fired in a third to seal victory.

There were two blows for the visitors as Kurt Zouma was stretchered off in first-half stoppage time after being knocked unconscious as he went up for a cross with goalkeeper Petr Cech, before Didier Drogba limped off after slipping on the rain-hit surface.

Derby had to cope without Ryan Shotton after the defender was sent off in their Championship defeat at Middlesbrough, so Buxton was introduced as Will Hughes replaced Jeff Hendrick in midfield.

The visitors, meanwhile, rang the changes, but Jose Mourinho still named a strong line-up for the trip to the iPro Stadium. Schurrle and Cesc Fabregas came back into the XI as Drogba was given the task of leading the line.

It was a quiet opening spell, only marked by Schurrle's early booking for a foul on Johnny Russell, but Chelsea dominated possession without looking in a hurry to score.

But the visitors took the lead on 23 minutes after excellent pressing forced a mistake from skipper Keogh, who surrendered possession to Drogba. The striker found Fabregas who quickly released Hazard, and the Belgian worked some space beautifully before firing a low shot beyond the goalkeeper.

Luis tested Lee Grant moments later, firing a stinging volley at the Derby goalkeeper after superb work by Fabregas in midfield.
The half ended on a sour note for the visitors as Cech punched away a corner and caught Kurt Zouma in the process. The defender was knocked unconscious by the goalkeeper’s shoulder and, after several minutes of treatment, the Chelsea man was stretchered off.
Derby started the second half brightly, and Hughes nearly levelled things as he tested Cech with a low effort after excellent work by Johnny Russell down the right-hand side.

But Chelsea quickly added to their lead as Drogba was brought down by Hughes in midfield, and Luis stepped up to fire in a stunning 30-yard free kick, which rifled into the top corner and gave Grant no chance.

Drogba then had to go off as Chelsea had to make a second substitution because of injury, after the forward went down awkwardly on the rain-soaked pitch.

The hosts were then given a lifeline as substitute Branislav Ivanovic gave the ball away and Bryson played a one-two with Russell before firing a 20-yard effort past Cech and in off the post.
It wasn't to be for Derby, though, as Buxton was sent off in bizarre circumstances. Grant slid out to take the ball away from Remy and looked to have handled outside the box, but after consulting with his assistant, referee Jon Moss gave the defender his marching orders for a tug on the striker.

Chelsea sealed the victory soon after as Fabregas played in Remy, who drew a fine save from Grant, but the goalkeeper could only parry it into the path of Schurrle and the German made no mistake to fire the ball low into the net and confirm the visitors' passage into the last four.

Liverpool visit for Norwegian starlet Martin Odegaard

The teenager, who turns 16 later this month, is one of Europe's hottest properties and has already made similar trips to Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Real Madrid and Manchester United among others.

Odegaard, who became the youngest player to feature in a European Qualifier when he played against Bulgaria aged 15 years and 300 days, currently plays for Stromsgodset in Norway.

He will be able to sign a formal professional contract when he turns 16 on December 17 and is a self-confessed Liverpool fan like his father, who accompanied him on his visit to Merseyside which also included a tour of Anfield.

"Liverpool have always been my dream club," Odegaard said last month. "But I will not let this affect my decision when I choose a new club.

"It's all about finding the team that is best for me and for my development. That is not necessarily Liverpool."

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is aware of the youngster's quality.

Speaking last month he said: "I know he's a big talent, at that age to be playing senior football at 15 and in a competitive league.

"He's got wonderful ability and wonderful talent."

Premier League: Counter-attacking Manchester United punish wasteful Arsenal

Arsenal dominated for the majority of the game but fell behind in the second half thanks to an unfortunate own goal from Kieran Gibbs.

Wayne Rooney seemed to have put the game beyond the hosts when he capped off a swift breakaway to score late on.

Substitute Olivier Giroud set up a tense few moments when he pulled a goal back in stoppage time but United held out to claim a second successive Premier League win.

Louis van Gaal admitted prior to kick-off he had been forced into playing a back-three, with the inexperienced Paddy McNair joining Tyler Blackett and Chris Smalling, and United were fortunate to keep the score goalless at half-time as the trio faltered.

Left wing-back Luke Shaw was also forced off with a knock in the opening 30 minutes, as Arsenal rained shots at David de Gea, and the Spaniard turned out to be the away side's man-of-the-match.

Jack Wilshere, who was also forced off later with a possible ankle injury, missed a glorious chance from 10 yards that De Gea palmed away and Danny Welbeck, playing against his former club for the first time, also had chances to beat him

But left-back Gibbs collided with goalkeeper Wojcech Szczesny in the build up to the opener, allowing Antonio Valencia to drill a shot that found the far corner off Gibbs’ outstretched leg on the floor.

Arsenal poured bodies forward in search of an equaliser and the inevitable space left at the back allowed Angel di Maria to break quickly and set up Rooney to chip Damian Martinez, who had replaced the injured Szczesny, from close-range.

Giroud came off the bench to make a long-awaited return from injury and his superb strike into the top corner set up a tense period in eight minutes of added time.

But United moved into the top four with a fifth Premier League victory in nine games.

International friendly: Wayne Rooney double helps England beat Scotland 3-1 in Glasgow

After half an hour of a predictably frantic first half, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain nodded home a precision long ball from the impressive Jack Wilshere before Rooney's effort early in the second half put England in sight of a routine victory.

It was not all plain sailing for Roy Hodgson's visitors as a neatly-worked late goal from Andy Robertson ignited Scottish hope again - but a swift and emphatic reply from Rooney ensured England remain unbeaten north of the border since 1985.

Despite the crescendo of a partisan crowd creating an intimidating atmosphere ahead of kick-off, England were quickly into stride and carved out two decent chances in the opening five minutes.

Gary Cahill should have done better than send a free header high and wide from Stewart Downing's corner and moments later, Danny Welbeck fired tamely at David Marshall when played into space in the inside left channel by Rooney.

Scotland survived and applied some pressure of their own before the quarter-hour mark with Ikechi Anya causing Nathaniel Clyne problems down the hosts' left and Steven Whittaker seeing two well-struck drives blocked by England defenders.

The home side's best move followed with Shaun Maloney and Scott Brown combining neatly to elude several tackles and set Robertson free down the left, only for the full-back's pacy cross to flash across Fraser Forster's goal to safety.

The moment of the first half belonged to England, though, and it came in the 32nd minute. Wilshere collected the ball just inside Scotland territory and after a quick glance up, picked out the run of Oxlade-Chamberlain with a perfect diagonal ball that his Arsenal colleague glanced into the far corner from 12 yards.

Maloney lashed an inviting opening wastefully into the stands three minutes before the interval and the half-time whistle then came amid a cacophony of whistles attempting to drown out a rendition of 'God Save The Queen' from around 5,000 travelling supporters.

There were no fewer than five changes at half-time with Phil Jagielka replacing Gary Cahill and Adam Lallana on for the largely-anonymous Downing for England, while Scotland boss Gordon Strachan threw on Craig Gordon, James Morrison and Darren Fletcher in place of David Marshall, Scott Brown and Chris Martin.

The second began poorly for the hosts - Charlie Mulgrew going into the book for a cynical body-check on a flying Oxlade-Chamberlain.
From the resulting set-piece, the ball fell for Wilshere and his volley across goal ricocheted off the boot of Robertson into the danger zone, where Rooney did well to generate enough power to send an eight-yard header beyond Gordon and into the corner of the net.

Scotland worked Forster for the first time in the 51st minute, when Mulgrew's long diagonal free-kick eluded Rooney and fell for Russell Martin, whose instinctive header forced the Celtic goalkeeper to tip the ball over from just underneath his crossbar.

The game became disjointed in the final half-hour with the substitutions continuing - Hodgson replacing Luke Shaw and Welbeck with Kieran Gibbs and Raheem Sterling while for Scotland, Sheffield Wednesday striker Stevie May entered the fray in place of Grant Hanley as Strachan looked to force a way back into the game.

Wilshere then dragged a slightly awkward volley well wide of the post from 18 yards as England looked to add gloss to the scoreline but at the other end, the game was suddenly brought to life again with six minutes of normal time remaining.

The ever-willing Robertson showed great determination and vision to slide in recently-arrived substitute Johnny Russell down the left and the Derby forward's return pass provided Robertson with the chance to tuck the ball home low at the near post.

But any hopes of a famous comeback were immediately extinguished by a slick move from the visitors, with an incisive pass from the tireless James Milner sending Lallana down the by-line and Rooney slamming home the Liverpool man's cut-back from six yards.

US falters late in 2-1 loss to Colombia in london.

Teofilo ''Teo'' Gutierrez headed in a tiebreaking goal in the 87th minute, and Colombia rallied to beat the United States 2-1 Friday night in an exhibition at Fulham's Craven Cottage

Jozy Altidore converted a penalty kick in the 10th minute, his 25th international goal, after Jermaine Jones headed the ball into the penalty area toward Rubio Rubin, who made his international debut. The ball struck the left arm of Pablo Armero.

Third-ranked Colombia tied the score in the 60th when James Rodriguez sent a through ball toward Gutierrez, who was in an offside position. Gutierrez didn't touch the ball, Carlos Bacca ran onto it, went wide to his right and scored from 6 yards.

And on a night when west London felt more like a part of Colombia with thousands of fans in yellow giving the team raucous support, Gutierrez scored the winner against Brad Guzan. It came off a cross from Edwin Cardona, who played the ball over Julian Green into the penalty area.

The Americans conceded late goals in a pair of 1-1 ties at home last month, in the 88th minute against Ecuador and the 86th against Honduras.

USA's Rubio Rubin, centre, heads the ball during an international friendly soccer match against …
U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann attributed the late goals to lack of conditioning at this point in the European club season.

''We had many players struggling after the World Cup to get back into shape, especially European players,'' he said. ''We had quite a few European players losing their starting spots. Right now they're on the way to getting them back, but it took quite a long time, because they came late in the preseason, so they're not as fit yet to claim right away their starting spots. Jozy is a good example, Fabian Johnson, Timmy Chandler, John Brooks, Julian Green - all of them, they struggled.''
