Tell You What the podcast
Podcast discussions with young songwriters about the craft of songwriting, the live music experience, and other stuff.
All of the smart people who know things kept telling me to try to get Jeffrey Martin on the podcast. These people turned out to be quite correct.
Jeffrey was kind enough to take time out of his busy touring schedule to sit down at Tell You What! studios for an engaging conversation. We discussed his incredibly great record, "Thank God We Left the Garden"; I was fascinated by Jeffrey's explanation of his creative process, as he tries to uncover the lyrics that are attached to particular melodies.
Jeffrey and I also discuss our upcoming podcast spinoff series where we will break down the classic song, "That's the Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia"-stay tuned!

This was a personal favorite conversation with a fascinating artist and person. Abe Partridge: former preacher, Air Force veteran, songwriter, musician, visual artist, podcast star (Alabama Astronaut), musical explorer/archivist, punk rocker (Psych Peas)...
Abe shares his fascinating personal story with honesty, self awareness, amazing insight and humor.

Traveled half way round the world to New Zealand and who do I bump into but Dani and Nick, the fabulous musicians from who talked with me on Episode 26. The reach of the Tell You What! enterprise is far flung.
Nick gave us a great afternoon tour of his stunning home territory around Christchurch. Any of you who happen to be in the south island, they have a few shows left on their NZ tour. South for Winter is a band that as it turns out are true to their name.
Look out for their upcoming album release, will be a good one.
W***y Tea Taylor songwriter, musician, storyteller deluxe took over Tell You What! Studios for a couple days recently. We had a fun, wide ranging, slightly meandering (in the best way), highly entertaining and insightful discussion.
W***y also performed a show here at the studio complex, and he completely won over a house full of new fans and new best friends.
Check out this episode, it has already taken its place as one of my all time favs. And spend some time with W***y’s latest amazing record, The Great Western Hangover.
Humbird music is beautiful and surprising, experimental Americana-ish takes on traditional storytelling. I talked with Siri Undlin, the musician behind the Humbird moniker, at the most excellent Mile of Music Festival in Appleton WI.
Hear about working with bad ideas, how it sucks to pretend, and is warm music easier to digest? Also what does the mysterious cat have to say about any of this?
Tune in to find out, and hear one of my favorite pod conversations.
While you wait anxiously for Chris Pierce upcoming album release, check out this excellent conversation. Chris was a warm, engaging, and thoughtful guest. We covered but a small slice of his amazing variety of creative endeavors. Thanks Chris!
Do you know what “shoegaze-icana” music sounds like? Don’t even worry about it just listen to the fantastic album from Why Bonnie, “90 in November”.
Blair Howerton talks about writing these songs while quarantined in her nyc apartment, songs about memories and looking back (or not). Also covered: Blair’s drum ambitions, biblical stories, and choosing your creative parent’s artwork as your album cover (interesting concept…)

Full band attendance: Sasha, Avery, Max from Damn Tall Buildings. We hear about their excellent album Sleeping Dogs, writing with a lot of words, and rockin the Pasta Loft. Also, does Sasha actually hate me and think my podcast sucks? Tune in to find out!
Willi Carlisle is a folk singer, poet, square dance caller, and (self admitted) mediocre puppeteer. He’s also one of my favorite guests ever. Willi joins us to talk about his most excellent album Peculiar, Missouri; his creative journey, his love of performance. Also: advice from a Serbian clown and how he successfully(?) rhymed coffee table with coffee table.
I hunted down Ian and Dani, Fellow Pynins in Kansas City at Folk Alliance International conference. Fascinating tales of roving the UK, Ireland, Scotland with their children ensued; hear how they collected traditional tunes from folks they met and turned some of their renditions into the wonderful Lady Mondegreen album.
Also convinced them to play a song live in the Tell You What! satellite studio, hear the whole thing at the tail end of the episode. Good vibes abound.

Happy Father’s Day-I am celebrating by releasing this new very fun episode, in which I interview the talented songwriters for Lucy Clabby (who coincidentally is my daughter) and Shane McLaughlin. We are joined by Grammy Lifetime Achievement award winner and folk legend Tom Paxton.
Tom discovered the music of Buffalo Rose and was so taken with it he reached out to the band about working together. The recently released fabulous EP Rabbit is the result of that collab.
Tom shares priceless bits of songwriting insight, and a bonus Bob Dylan anecdote from their days together in the nyc folk scene. Lucy and Shane tell us what they have learned from Tom and some bits of creative wisdom of their own.
I get to talk a bit about my dad, the original music nerd of the fam and a Tom Paxton fan from way way back. A special opportunity for me to bridge my own family’s musical generations and celebrate the continuing power of music and the joy of discovery.
Really well done video, beautiful and touching version/collaboration with Tom Paxton by Buffalo Rose
Ryan Anderson from Bendigo Fletcherhas things to say. We hear about what it was like for the band working with the amazing Ken Coomer (Uncle Tupelo, Wilco) to create their most excellent album Fits of Laughter.
Ryan discussed how his relationship to the natural world (including goats I guess?) influences his approach to music making. Is ditch digging or lawn mowing more conducive to songwriting? Also Ryan gently encourages us to call our mothers, even if we just need a small loan.
Operators are standing by.
Here is our latest episode-had a blast talking with Margo Cilker and her record Pohorylle is so great.

The goal of the church is to “enjoy each day and make better music

Episode 35: Buffalo Nichols — Tell You What! the Podcast Buffalo Nichols joins us from Austin to discuss his debut solo self-titled album, just out on Fat Possum Records. Episode 34: Jeremy Pinnell — Tell You What! the Podcast Kentucky musician Jeremy Pinnell joins us to talk about the making of his third studio album, “Goodbye L.A.” This time around, Jeremy went for a record that “would make people feel happy, make people dance”, but the themes are still weighty as on his previous critically acclaimed albums. New episode: Sav, Katie, and Michael from The Accidentals join us to chat about their new EP, Time Out (Session 1). The band was quite productive during quarantine: learning new skills, finding ways to connect with their audience, and collaborating online with some legendary songwriters. This EP is a product of those collaborations, each a co-write with a different songwriting hero of theirs. We had an engaging, thoughtful and ultimately uplifting discussion. Check it out!
