•• Remembering Legendary Sarod Maestro Pandit Radhika Mohan Maitra on his 105th Birth Anniversary (13 February 1917) ••

Pt. Radhika Mohan Maitra (13 February 1917 – 16 October 1981) was a Legendary Indian sarod player and the guru of Pandit Buddhadev Dasgupta and Pandit Sanjoy Bandopadhyay. Maitra was considered an influential figure in 20th century sarod playing and received the title Sangeetacharya. He was among those awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1971.

Radhika Mohan Maitra came from a Bengali zamindar family that had a history of musicianship and of patronising that art. His grandfather, Lalit Mohan Maitra, was a player of the tabla, his father, Brajendra Mohan, played the sarod, and his mother learned the sitar. Among those who were patronised by his grandfather was Mohammed Amir Khan and it was he who acted as the guru and principal teacher of Radhika, although the pupil also learned other instruments and styles of music with his permission. In addition to his musical training, Maitra held an M.A. degree in philosophy, awarded by the University of Calcutta, and also a LL.B. law degree. He taught philosophy for a while and was also a noted musicologist with several books to his name.

Maitra rose to prominence as a musician in the 1950s, when he was in demand for concerts both within India and elsewhere in the world. Aside from radio recitals, he performed in countries such as Afghanistan, Australia, China, New Zealand and the Philippines as part of cultural delegations organised by the Government of India, and he also performed in a non-government tour of the USA in 1975. It was from around that time that he gradually reduced his appearances, preferring instead to concentrate on teaching both the sarod and the sitar. His students were often obtained by a referral method, whereby a potential new pupil was introduced by someone who was already being taught by Maitra. Sometimes he would teach directly, and other times he would delegate the task to a student.

In July 1944, Maitra married Lalita Chaudhuri, a lady from the "royal family" of Sushang. He died on 16 October 1981, aged 64, following an accident.

On his Birth Anniversary, Hindustani Classical Music And Everything pays rich tributes to him for his contributions to the Indian Classical Music. 🙏💐

•• Remembering Legendary Hindustani Classical Vocalist Padma Bhushan Ustad Amir Khan on his 48th Death Anniversary (13 February 1974) ••

Ustad Amir Khan (15 August 1912 - 13 February 1974) was a well-known Indian Classical Vocalist. He is considered one of the most influential figures in Hindustani Classical Music. He is the founder of the Indore Gharana.
Amir Khan was born in a family of musicians in Indore, India to Shahmir Khan, a Sarangi and Veena player of the Bhendi Bazaar Gharana, served at the court of the Holkars of Indore. He was initially trained in the Sarangi by his father. However, seeing his interest in vocal music, his father gradually devoted more time to vocal training, focusing on the merukhand technique. Amir Khan was exposed at an early age to many different styles, since just about every musician who visited Indore would come to their house and there would be mehfils at their place on a regular basis. He also learned the basics of Tabla playing from one of his maternal uncles, who was a Tabla player.
Amir Khan moved to Bombay(now Mumbai) in 1934 and there he gave a few concerts and cut about half a dozen 78-rpm records. These initial performances were not well received. Following his father's advice, in 1936 he joined the services of Maharaj Chakradhar Singh of Raigadh Sansthan in Madhya Pradesh. He performed at a music conference in Mirzapur on behalf of the Raja, with many illustrious musicians present, but he was hooted off the stage after only 15 minutes or so. The organizer suggested singing a Thumri, but he refused, saying that his mind was never really inclined towards Thumri. He stayed at Raigadh for only about a year. Amir Khan's father died in 1937. Later, Khan Sahib lived for some time in Delhi and Calcutta, but after the partition of India, he moved back to Bombay.
Amir Khan had a rich baritone voice with a three-octave range and could move equally effortlessly in any octave. He developed his own gayaki, influenced by the styles of Abdul Waheed Khan (vilambit tempo), Rajab Ali Khan taans) and Aman Ali Khan (merukhand). This unique style, known as the Indore Gharana, blends the spiritual flavor and grandeur of dhrupad with the ornate vividness of Khyal. Amir Khan Sahib presented an aesthetically detailed badhat in ati-vilambit laya using bol-alap with merukhandi patterns followed by gradually speeding up sargams with various ornamentations, taans and bol-taans with complex and unpredictable movements and jumps while preserving the ragastructure, and finally a madhya laya or drut laya Chhota Khyal or a Ruba'idar Tarana. He helped popularize the Tarana, as well as khyalnuma compositions in the Dari variant of Persian. While he was famous for his use of merukhand, he did not do a purely merukhandi alap but rather inserted merukhandi passages throughout his performance.
He believed in competition between the genres of Classical Music and film and other popular music, and he felt that Classical renderings needed to be made more beautiful while remaining faithful to the spirit and grammar of the raga. He used to say, "नग़मा वही नग़मा है जो रूह सुने और रूह सुनाए" (music is that which originates from the heart and touches the soul).

Khan Sahib died a premature death in a car accident in Calcutta, and was buried at Calcutta's Gobra cemetery.
His awards include;
Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1967, Presidential Award in 1971, Padma Bhushan in 1971 and Swar Vilas from Sur Singar Sansad in 1971.

On his Death Anniversary, Hindustani Classical Music And Everything pays rich tributes to the legend and are very grateful for his contributions to the Indian Classical Music. 💐🙏
