Bringing a bit of Greek identity into your daily life

My daily life in Greece is surrounded by images that most people take for granted: the colours of the flag that are often immortalised in my environment, the sun, grapevines, orange orchards and olive trees, an icy cold glass of frappe, among many others. It is these images of my daily life which have endeared visitors to my country, creating a sense of nostalgia in both the foreign tourist and the diaspora Greek., and it is these same images which I wish to reincarnate in my fabric art.

Potato chip quilt: With the arrival of the cooler weather, I managed to finish another scrap project, using up close to 2000 separate fabric scraps.

With the cooler weather, sewing is back in my daily life.
Two years in the making. Finally finished. Made completely from scraps. Lined with a fleece blanket. I've called it "winter at the beach".

Old woven fabrics, made on the loom by women who are no longer on this earth: we.cant keep everything, so we have to find ways to give them a new.home.
I had a number of such items and I know that I can't keep them all. Most family members prefer the modern look. I sold them - some as bags, others as fabric - on a Greek trade site (vendora.gr) and they have now gone to their new home.

I get a lot of joy when I make something useful out of something useless. These aprons (shirt apron not finished) will be used at a beach-side restaurant this summer. They will be stored in the denim bag when not in use

A friend asked me how she could recycle her old jeans into an apron. That's an easy one. Denim aprons are very durable and easy to keep clean. They become a treasured item of clothing when you make them out of your clothes

A new quilt top, based on Morocco's Blue City

A labour of love:
Blue and beige scraps, interrupted by a few bright bold colours. About 1000 pieces, each one sewn to the other by hand in one long strip, while the strips were sewn by machine. Waiting for padding and lining ...
I've called this quilt top Beachcombing.

My patchwork hobby is not very popular where I live, so I have to find creative ways to make use of the quilts i make. I use some at home, and I have given many away to friends and family. This winter, I decided to use some in my rental rooms Zamboli. People are always initially surprised when they see so much handmade fabric art and they seem to appreciate it, even though in my small Mediterranean town, quilting and patchwork are virtual unknowns.

I've named this quilt top Mediterranean Waves. The inspiration for the design comes from my neighbourhood (I live near the sea). I create Greek based designs so I have a lot of blue fabric remnants from mainly old clothes. The white material in this quilt top isade from fabric remnants left over from bridesmaid dresses. I'm backing the finished quilt top with a fleece blanket. It will make a light winter coverlet, and it can be used as blanket cover for extra warmth. It's especially useful for people who don't like to sleep on beds made up with duvets

This patchwork project took me nearly five years to finish. I started it in the wrong way. I kept trying to correct all my mistakes quickly. The mistakes were all due to trying to make something difficult in haste, so I just made things worse. It would have been easy to say, just trash it, but I couldn't do that because I was using fabrics that were precious to me.
I was using my old floral cotton clothing. Some of the clothes I used to make this quilt top were my own items, and I also bought some items from consignment stores, the kind of clothes that I wished to wear myself. But they weren't my size, so of course I couldn't wear them. I just liked them so much that I bought them anyway, hoping that they would fit me. They went well with my old florals.
I decided not to add batting, so I just lined the quilt top with some fabric that I'd found in a junk shop. I had other ideas for that fabric, but my haste ruined the project and I couldn't use it as I had intended to. To cover my sloppiness, I decided to turn the lined quilt top into a duvet cover with an old flannel sheet. The only part of the project that I ended up enjoying was making the binding. I hand-sewed it on the back side.
Even though I know that my workmanship in this quilt top is not at all good (I'd give myself a grade of 2/10), I'm so glad I finished it and turned it into something useful.

And they look even better next to books 😍
