Another dear friend has smiled his last smile. The older I get, the more I say goodbye.
My friend Mike Barry has moved to the distant shore.
MIKE BARRY: THE AGENT OF CHANGE
as an agent of change
he did so much
for so many
for so long
let his memory be an enduring monument
for standing up and speaking out
sprinkling kindness
with serenity, acceptance
courage and knowledge
his kindness was contagious
his love unfaltering
his legacy was unconditional love
now he lay beneath the american flag
front and center
as mourners bid adieu
to a man for the many
with integrityin thee firstt-degree
mike is gone
but he’s left us parting gifts
and a treasure map
that we can all follow
towards tomorrow
but just for today
the gift of faith
the gift of hope
the gift of optimism
the gift of laughter
and the immeasurable gift
of enduring love for one another
he was as much a student
as he was a teacher
and his teaching created change
with his arms and heart wide open
and laughter as the liniment
on the highway from hope to healing
he believed in me
he believed in you
together we must pay it forward
believing in others
as he believed in us
loving others
until they can love themselves
with the concern
compassion
and simple kindness
that paved his personal path
father of life
mother of love
welcome home
your spiritual son
sustained with simple sobriety
into the big hall
far beyond our earthly comprehension
a man well-loved
a life well-lived
may we all strive to be
agents of change

I just discovered a signed Don James football from the 1992 Rose Bowl, following the 91 season. (Huskies beat Michigan 34-14 to remain a perfect 12-0 on the season) - I have been covering the Huskies for years for various national sports networks, well before I started working for KJR. They gave commemorative footballs to all media members. Following the game, I ran into Coach James in the bowels of the Rose Bowl stadium, and he graciously signed my football. I thought it was long lost, but it recently surfaced. I am wondering how much it is worth? Any thoughts?
HAPPY NEW DAY
welcome to a new year
more importantly
a bright new day
filled with hope
in search of health and happiness
in the promising days ahead
amidst the changes
choices and challenges
as the holiday decorations
are taken down
and resolutions and expectations
are ramping up
we forge ahead into january
ever so gently
in search of newness promised
after the champagne
and ruckus of reveling on the eve
we fall face-first
with a tincture of exuberance
into a new calendar year
striving to make every day
a new year’s day
the train for tomorrow
is leaving today
on track 24
moving at the speed of love
take a seat
count your blessings
and then count them again
and so it is
and away we go
into a happy new day
new year
replete with cognition
and courage
in search of wisdom
and serenity
let’s celebrate each happy new day
with gleeful anticipation
along with unmet expectations
still running the race
to make the world
a better place
searching for solutions
beyond mere resolutions
look not so much at the year ahead
but to the hours and minutes
that define the day to day
let them sparkle and shine
sanctifying the ever-present
by honoring health
growth and gratitude
and letting kindness
lead the way

Betty Ford went into recovery 45 yrs ago and changed the face of recovery! I recently uncovered an interview that I did with her 41 yrs ago at her home in Ranch Mirage, CA. I was doing a cover story for ‘Alcoholism & Addiction Magazine’….and it was one of the first extensive interviews that she granted, months before the opening of the Betty Ford Center. She was thrilled to find it among my archives, and excited to share it on ‘Recovery-Coast to Coast’ - I hope you enjoy it!
