Weir Farm Art Alliance
Manage Artist-in-Residence program at Weir Farm National Historic Site. Artists in all visual media welcome to apply.
Cora Weir Burlingham was the third daughter of famed artist J. Alden Weir. A trained landscape architect, Cora moved into the farm next to her childhood home in 1931 and worked to renovate the house and gardens. This included the construction of an innovative sunken garden and a stone wall so long it was referred to as “The Great Wall of Cora.” Almost 40 years later, Cora donated her land to the Nature Conservancy in the first steps towards protecting what is today Weir Farm National Historical Park, including the park’s Burlingham House Visitor Center in her former home.

Church Surfer -- Norrin Radd Considers Earth
"I created the piece in 2011, but it was never realized into the form I intended -- a line drawing cut by laser. It always bothered me that I never realized the piece.
Since I began working at Weir Farm, I've been thinking about larger-scale work because of the lavish size of this studio, and it occurred to me that I could realize my Landview Heroes or Eco Crusaders series in a medium I never dreamed of using until now. The studio is such a beautiful building; it is situated in a beautiful bit of country, and the acreage of the National Historic Park is associated with the birthplace of American Impressionism. All this prompted thoughts about how what is made inside the building — my work addresses themes about landscape and ecology, for example — could reflect back at the surrounding land. I made a formal proposal to print my Landview Heroes on a vinyl banner and suspend it from the sliding door pulleys at the studio's entrance. My proposal was accepted. This project is the first-ever artist's installation to involve the Weir Farm Artist-In-Residency studio exterior as an installation site."

• Norrin Radd, a.k.a. Silver Surfer first appeared in Fantastic Four #48 and was created by Jack Kirby in 1966
• The image and text I am using come from issue 1 of Silver Surfer's own silver age comic, drawn by John Buscema in 1968
